I get the impression that it's just there for shock value.

OP posts:
notnowbernard · 10/03/2010 20:35

I hid the whole thing ages ago

Awful

youremindmeofthebabe · 10/03/2010 20:35

have never perused it before. Might have a look..

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 10/03/2010 20:38

It's hysterical (I do dip in and contribute.......sorry) Brunhilde or Tarquin anyone (sorry bad form)

youremindmeofthebabe · 10/03/2010 20:38

Hilda and buster??

Buddleja · 10/03/2010 20:51

Mine was serious. Honest.

2rebecca · 10/03/2010 21:50

Must be a flexible nonstereotyping name that you cvan do any type of job with, easy to spell, make it obvious what sex you are, a real name so the kid doesn't get bullied but not so common that there are 4 in the class, and not sound silly with the surname.
Other than that take your pick...

HappyMummyOfOne · 10/03/2010 22:00

Never been to that topic before, I hopethe majority of posts are in jest.

CaveMum · 10/03/2010 22:30

I suggest you ladies have a look athis site if you want to see some truly awful baby names
www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/

I tried to share it in the Baby Name forum but don't think it went down well! I have a look at it every now and then just to give myself a laugh!

I have 3 main pet hates when it comes to babynames:

  1. Changing the spelling of a regular name to make it "different" - Soosin instead of Susan, etc
  2. Names that make a child sound like a stripper/ porn star
  3. Tailoring siblings into sets - "What name goes with...?" Argghh! Your children will not live their whole lives together so why the hell do their names need to "match"?!
janeiteisFedUp · 10/03/2010 22:32

In 'Red' magazine this month, there is a woman whose baby is called Calypso. I did think that was a bit bonkers tbh.

Must admit to quite liking Tarquin though (in an absolutely would never use it myself kind of way).

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/03/2010 22:32

I love Baby Names. It is a fluffy respite from all the vitriol on here

bibbitybobbityhat · 10/03/2010 22:34

I love the baby names topic! What's wrong with it?

Some of the suggestions are, I'm sure, the result of a bit of gentle trollery. But no harm done.

It doesn't generally get nasty over there. If someone's name gets slated they usually take it in good cheer.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/03/2010 22:37

exactly, bibbity. We would do well to remember that on AIBU

< sanctimonious >

I do like to put the cat amongst the pigeons every now and again by suggesting Nigel to everyone who asks.

SusieCarmichael · 10/03/2010 22:39

omg! cavemum i am rofl wtf! 'tinkletop!

ClarksPiestoAmmanford · 10/03/2010 23:56

Calypso was a character in The Chamomile Lawn. I always quite liked it, but (as someone else said) in an 'absolutely would never use it myself' kind of way.

I think it would be a good name for a cat, though. No idea why!

KatnKankles · 11/03/2010 00:07

I love it. Some are a little extreme, lots are 'does John go with Edward as a middle name' type things...

The extreme ones are what makes it fun.

It starts to get a little MN if anyone dares to suggest a name is 'chavvy' though....

displayuntilbestbefore · 11/03/2010 00:11

I enjoy having a look but have to admit that it incites in me a ruthless streak and I find myself either hideously gushing about names I like or unnecessarily scathing about those I don't

kreecherlivesupstairs · 11/03/2010 07:50

I occasionally look at it but have never posted there. I have wondered about the questions of which name goes with which other. Like cavemum said, tailoring them into sets. Why do that?

EcoMouse · 11/03/2010 08:08

I've never looked. Some of my DC have unusual names and I just know I'll see those names torn apart mentioned at some point. Then I'd become irrationally stroppy!

I don't expect everyone to like them but I'm not going to seek out debate over them either

BouncingTurtle · 11/03/2010 08:12

No I don't go much on there ever since people laughed at me for wanting to call ds (if he turned out to be a girl) Chlamydia Candida I thought it sound beautiful and exotic!

Seriously though, you think it is quite an innocuous topic but it is laden with pitfalls.
Some people made fun of Inmaculada Concepcion. I pointed out (along with a few other people) that this is quite a common name in Spain, a deeply Catholic country, and in fact my cousin is called Inmaculada!

piscesmoon · 11/03/2010 08:13

I think that they are serious-many people want a unique name. They shouldn't post if they are not prepared for blunt replies.
I hate:
Made up names
Names that are spelt wrong imaginatively
Early 20th century names

Plenty love them-we are all different.

Bucharest · 11/03/2010 08:13

I am deadly serious on the baby names topic.

I consider it to be community service.

piscesmoon · 11/03/2010 08:15

If you can save a DC from future teasing in the playground it is indeed a community service!

As I've mentioned in one of the many baby name threads I have come across two names that shocked and appalled me in equal measure:

Gandalf - a small boy running riot in our local supermarket while his mum yelled: "Gandalf get back here!"

Aubergine - the grand-daughter of a work associate of mine. She was born at the same time as Apple Paltrow & her mum loved the name, but didn't want people to think she was copying Gwynyth.
She thought Aubergine was an appropriate substitute.

Why would anyone do that to their child?! To me it is tantamount to child abuse. Can you the problems these children will have throughout their lives? Prime Minister Gandalf Smith or President Aubergine Jones anyone?!

Kathsunn · 11/03/2010 08:38

I was going to call my ds2 Ella if he had been a girl, until my mother suggested Vaeda as a second name -- Ella Vaeda.

It did ruin the name for me.
