to add Annabel Karmel products to my boycott of Nestle?

GoldenSnitch · 09/03/2010 20:08

I've been a "fan" of Annabel Karmel's page on Facebook for a while now and occasionally get updates when she changes her status. The most recent of these changes read "check out some amazing recipes we created from nestle wholegrain, had a lot of fun with mummy bloggers and zoe ball, greg searle and lesley waters giving tips and advice".

A few people have commented on this posting with comments regarding how unhappy they are that Annabel Karmel would be seen to be supporting a company that many people regard as not having babies and children's best interests at heart. As someone who's entire career is based on childhood nutrition, it seems like a very unwise partnership to create.

In response to the comments made 'Annabel Karmel' (I realise it's her marketing team, not the woman herself) have responded with a link to an official statement on her web page. The statement reads like this - "We have had a few enquiries about my association with Nestle whole grain cereals campaign. Amazingly 90% of Brits don?t eat enough whole grains, so we had great fun devising recipes using Nestle whole grains such as buzzy bees and salmon fishcakes. We know that all mums are pressed for time so not only are my recipes fun but are really quick and easy to make.

We were only involved with the whole grain cereals campaign, however there were a few concerns about the association Nestle parent brand itself and the marketing of infant formula. We are happy to work with Nestle the company and my decision was based on the evidence as it stands today.

I agree with and firmly support Neslte?s belief breast feeding is the best way to feed a baby. However, not all mothers can breast feed and the only suitable substitute to breast milk approved by the World Health Organisation is infant formula. It is evident that Nestle complies with the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk substitutes (1981) and is very sensitive to the challenges that confront mothers in developing countries."

Link to statement

Now, as far as I was aware, the whole point of the Nestle boycott is that Nestle do not comply with the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk substitutes (1981)

They may be forced into complying in the UK, but they're not quite so constrained when it comes to some third world countries. Babymilkaction has some more details of where and how they're thought to be breaking the rules. They say that "Nestlé is targeted with the boycott because monitoring conducted by the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) finds it to be responsible for more violations of the World Health Assembly marketing requirements for baby foods than any other company"

So, seeing as the whole statement justifying the involvement with Nestle seems to be utter rubbish, AIBU to add boycotting Annabel Karmel to my Nestle boycott?

GoldenSnitch · 09/03/2010 20:26

TBH, it won't be hard. DS is 3 and DD is only 11 weeks so I'm not weaning at the moment.

I was never sure of her 'toddler meals' but the salt/sugar expose thing a little while ago put me off those anyway.

Will be cancelling my 'fan' status too although I'm tempted to hang around for a little while to see if there are any more statements first.

YANBU. We don't do Nestle in our house (DD1 can point out "the bad company" symbol). Shame on her.

GoldenSnitch · 09/03/2010 21:01

Wish DH was so compliant. Every blinking week, I have to remind him he can't have blinking Shreddies.

He gets Tesco's own version instead. I sell it to him by reassuring him they're cheaper

YANBU. I never liked her before, but certainly won't buy anything now!

GoldenSnitch · 09/03/2010 21:52

Doing well so far. Not even been chastised for being on Facebook yet!!

YANBU
She should be ashamed, it is just too easy to go along with the company line from Nestle. She should spend some time researching the companies she receives sponsorship from. Nestle will be LOVING a partnership with her, as she is (rightly or wrongly) THE voice of child nutrition in the UK.

Interestingly, my DH has professional contact with Nestle and recently had the chance to speak informally to a Nestle employee. He, being --brainwashed- informed by me, was well aware of the issues and asked this person how she felt working for them. Her response was: "Oh, that whole bfing thing is over now. Your wife is completely safe to buy Nestle as we completely support bfing around the world. The boycott ended years ago."

PrincessBoo · 09/03/2010 22:34

YANBU. AK is a sanctimonious cow anyway. I did baby led weaning anyway (smug).

This is just the final nail in her coffin I think.

Flounce :D

cakewench · 09/03/2010 23:35

YANBU! Thanks for pointing this out! I've forwarded the link on to friends who will be interested.

I'm shocked she's done it tbh. I'll be interested to hear about what sort of feedback she receives.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/03/2010 06:58

YANBU. I'm passing the details on, too.

GoldenSnitch · 10/03/2010 08:40

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know if there are any more updates

YANBU.

She's in the bonkers box with Miriam Stoppard and SWMNBN anyway.

notevenamousie · 10/03/2010 08:55

The salt thing did it for me too, not that I was ever a fan (BLW all the way, here). Though I've been bad at checking packets lately for Nestle.

JackBauer · 10/03/2010 09:44

YABU to not be boycotting her for being a smug cow in the first place

I have never bought her stuff since readin an interview with her and her son, hang on

Annabel
--When we swapped roles and we were in the kitchen, I was astonished to find that he'd never cooked chicken before. Quite scary. He's 18! He said, "Oh, is that what a wok looks like?"

We made one of my recipes, Chicken Karmel, which is very popular in this family. It takes 10 minutes from beginning to end, including the chopping. He seemed to really enjoy doing it. When we were making the sauce he said, "Wow, this is really good; I can't believe it! This is for one, is it?" I said no, it's for two actually. And then he ate the lot ... he does like to eat.

her son
Obviously it was good growing up in a house where cooking is important. I've been very lucky. There's always been loads of different choices for dinner: my mum'll cook four things and I'll just choose whatever I want.

here

She is so Do As I Say, Not As I Do, and then loads her 'ready meals' with salt.

But YANBU to point out yet another reason she is out of touch with 'normal' mothers so I thank you.

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2010 09:50

Agree with Jack's post.

SHe is a smug cow and her books are ridiculous.

100 puree recipes ffs.
No, you're okay, I can manage to work out what flavours work well together myself thanks. And her products are a complete rip off.

notevenamousie · 10/03/2010 09:55

Really good post JB - hope I don't have dc who can say that at his age!

GoldenSnitch · 10/03/2010 09:56

but 'Chicken Bang Bang' was supposed to be one of the recipies her Son loved cooking! Named because that's what he called it!! How could that be if he'd not cooked chicken till he was 18?

And 4 different things for dinner so they can choose!

It does kind of freak me out that all her recipes are written as though she is making it with her small children last week, when in fact they are all adults.

'your wife will be able to cook the same food that you've always had at home' WTF??

She is an awful woman.

Bucharest · 10/03/2010 10:08

and she refers to MrAnnabel as "Daddy".

Always a verrrrr bad sign on the bonkersometer.
