Hi
I have just registered with Mumsnet and am posting for the first time. I am an educated person used to using the web but I am finding all these weird abbreviations hard to work out and for that reason REALLY ANNOYING. DS / DH etc. WHat do they all mean??? I think I've worked out DH is husband and DS is a child but what are the other ones?
Help please

OP posts:

They are. Here

lostinwales · 09/03/2010 18:41

Try acronyms at the top of the page. Oh and welcome!

Collision · 09/03/2010 18:42

here

Hardys · 09/03/2010 18:42

anything in particular you are stuck on ffs

HelenMumsnet · 09/03/2010 18:42

Hi JenEm - and welcome to Mumsnet!

We have an acronynm/abbreviation cribsheet here

You can also get to it by scrolling up this page and clicking on Acronyms - the 5th blue link across from the line that starts with Talk: under the heading Mumsnet Talk.

lostinwales · 09/03/2010 18:44

Oh and steer clear of AIBU (am I being unreasonable) for a while unless you really want to know what other people think, it's not always gentle

Kaloki · 09/03/2010 18:54

It's confusing isn't it? However, be warned, given a while, you will start thinking in these abbreviations!

BuzzingNoise · 09/03/2010 19:00

And you know you spend too long on here when you actually start referring to your husband as DH in real life.

SixtyFootDoll · 09/03/2010 19:10

REal life?
Sorry I dont understand....

BuzzingNoise · 09/03/2010 19:21

I've only heard Real Life mentioned on here. I have never been there myself.

Imisssleeping · 09/03/2010 19:53

Are there real people in this real life some talk of?

SixtyFootDoll · 09/03/2010 20:57

Its a mystery to me, sounds a bit scary tbh

GoldenSnitch · 09/03/2010 21:06

It really should be the first page after you register..

"Your registration has been accepted, Welcome to Mumsnet - here's the acronyms...

...and please avoid creating an AIBU for at least the first month "

TrillianAstra · 09/03/2010 21:09

yy to the automatic newbies guide.

yy = yes yes = I agree wholeheatedly

GibbonInARibbon · 09/03/2010 21:15

Ahh that's what yy means!

Think I'm too old to start using that one but thanks Trills for explaining as I have wondered

LetThereBeRock · 09/03/2010 21:20

DS/DH/DD etc are not exclusive to Mumsnet and are used on many parenting forums, and also a few other non parenting related forums.

JenEm · 10/03/2010 16:42

Thanks, am clearer now but do think the main ones eg DH, DS, DD etc could be explained or linked to in the introductory e-mail.
Also that acronym list is slightly ridiculous. Do we really need an acronym for neurologically typical (NT). ??

OP posts:
paisleyleaf · 10/03/2010 17:13

Neurologically typical is a pain to type out, it's perfect for an acronym.

CrowAndAlice · 10/03/2010 17:18

NT is perfect when trying to establish whether or not a child's action and behaviour are because of personality, disability or otherwise.

i.e. My DS1 (7) likes to run at walls and hurt himself (NT btw).....

WillowM2B · 10/03/2010 17:40

BUMP actually means "Bring Up My Post" - posting on a/your thread to ensure it gets to the top of the page and noticed.

HTH

thesunshinesbrightly · 10/03/2010 17:44

Real life Not really sure what that is

Agree with the other's, do not go into AIBU you can peak, but no posting till at least a month, if you do decide to, Good Luck

Oh and Welcome, i'm sure you will love it here.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 10/03/2010 17:45

Welcome. Avoid AIBU for posting anything remotely serious.

Elsewhere we are very friendly.

LOL means laugh out loud NOT lots of love (as I thought when I first started - imagine the embarrassment)

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/03/2010 17:46

There are lots of posters here who have children with special needs, and therefore may have to refer to NT children. Tread carefully before you diss a particular acronym - it's there for a reason!

Oh, and welcome to MN.

(And second the avoidance of AIBU until you've got a better feel for the place!)

Avoid text speak and 'hun' and you'll be fine.

paisleyleaf · 10/03/2010 17:55

Also, I think it's true to say, that there isn't someone sat in an office thinking up acronyms. A lot of them have evolved as they've been useful.

chippychippybangbang · 10/03/2010 19:30

NT definitely not a redundant acronym for those of us who post on the SN boards..

A healthy fondness for the ridiculous is also slightly necessary if you post on MN imo..
