to wonder why all the leaflets in Matalan today were in 2 different languages, none of them English?

I'm not racist and I'm all for Equal opportunity but would really have been nice if there was an English version that I could have read?

Even the staff behind the counter had no idea what the leaflet said but it had a big 1/2 so presume it was something to do with a sale.

The reason the leaflets were in 2 different languages was so that the people who speak those languages can read them? Did you really wonder why? I expect the larger notices were written in english.

You're probably one of those people who complain about "foreigners" who send all their earnings home - yet if they spend it in Matalan you object to that too.

madsadlibrarian · 09/03/2010 18:40

can u tell us where this branch of matalan is, so that we can go in there and pretend to speak the relevant language - presumably I could persuade staff that the notice said just about anything - as long as it had a "half" in it ???

after the day I've had I could do with a laff.

srsly though - your council tax isn't paying for it - I think it may be time to r-e-l-a-x and show a little peace and love

I did get tense when I turned up to an event rcntly to find that an interpreter was being paid for the evening - but the individuals who couldn't speak english hadn't "managed" to turn up. Poor interpreter didn't know whether to be grateful or embarrassed when the organisers re-assured her that she would still get paid.

Kaloki · 09/03/2010 18:56

Maybe there were and all the English ones had been taken?

choufleur · 09/03/2010 19:00

maybe there are some large communities near that particular matalan for whom english isn't their first language and the clever marketing people thought it would be a good idea to print some flyer in their language so that they bought more stuff and made more money for the shop.

runnybottom · 09/03/2010 19:01

You do know that saying "I'm not racist but.." does in fact mark you out clearly as slightly to the right of Thatcher?

Kelix · 09/03/2010 20:28

madsad... my DP suggested that when I came in and told him lol Half price off everything forever was his suggestion

Kaloki - I did ask for an english one the 2 people I asked that were working said that there wern't any

BAFE - Never complained about anything to do with 'foreigners', if anyone works for a living its upto them what they do with the cash, I did wonder why yes or I wouldnt have asked?

I understand that to people whos first langauge isn't english the leaflets would be beneficial but surely there should be an english one too? Wouldn't expect to go to Germany and there be leaflets in English but not in German? Just seemed a bit strange

No they never said they had ran out - they said there wasn't any in the first place

So the point of this thread is still why was there no english leaflets?

nickytwotimes · 09/03/2010 20:39

Kelix - it's 'whose' not 'whos' if you're going to pickup on English language skills or the lack of them.

NEVER start a thread with the statement 'I'm not racist...'. Next you'll be saying that some of your best friends are black.

nickytwotimes · 09/03/2010 20:40

lol at self - pick up, not pickup.

Deliberate, for irony, honest.

bernadetteoflourdes · 09/03/2010 20:44

The promotional literature is very definitely in English in our local Harvey Nicks (Knightsbridge). The staff are all delightful, in fact they only use received pronounciation. I myself had been pondering the vexing question "where do all the poor foreigners buy their clothes"?
And this Matador shop where is it Milton Keynes? [hmm}

Tiredmumno1 · 09/03/2010 21:01

Are you kidding me what daft responses. I think i understand the op its nothing about being bloody racist maybe she raised the point as we do live in england so you expect to be able to read in english first and foremost, before anything else??

saslou · 09/03/2010 21:04

Not unreasonable to expect to see an English version of the leaflet in a store that is in England, though.

nah not racist at all. Just you, know, highlighting how they're all taking over with their leaflets in Matalan.
They'll be squatting in your shed next, you mark my words. 15 of them at least. And elf and saftey will sue you if you haven't provided them with leaflets.

We are playing daily hate bingo aren't we?

Kelix · 09/03/2010 21:58

Tierdmumno1 - Thanks for that, couldnt have said it better myself (obviously)

Thanks saslou thats pretty much all I was trying to say

The reason I put Im not racist is, well because Im not, but also because I knew people would turn it into that. Its not like I saw the leaflets and blew a fuse and have thought about nothing else since, its just I would expect to see an English version along side others and wanted to know what others thought.

I have no idea what the leaflet said as I didnt understand any of the languages it was printed in. Ill go lock my shed tho just in case

@runnybottom I myself provide various leaflets in my Orangery and we have a couple of mulilingual translators on hand (in the lodge house) to cover for just these eventualities. You never can be too sure of people these days there are so many foreigners, and just look at football we haven't had any proper English players since that nice David Beckham cap left the country

feedthegoat · 09/03/2010 22:16

Whats the real problem? Are you worried there is some sort of secret half price sale in Matalan that you haven't been invited to?

Kelix · 09/03/2010 22:21

feedthegoat - the thought did cross my mind

You could have picked them up and brought them home and then googled for a translation if you were that bothered
