There has been an out break of measles at DS nursery, 2 cases I believe.

AIBU to take my 2 week old baby into nursery when collecting him??

My DS has had his MMR BTW.

Might be better off under another heading, e.g. health? But this from the NHS:

"Measles is...highly infectious.

The measles virus is contained in the millions of tiny droplets that come out of the nose and mouth when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

You can catch measles by breathing in these droplets or, if the droplets have settled on a surface, by touching the surface and then placing your hands near your nose or mouth."

So I suppose you need to check on another website how long the virus can live e.g. on a door handle, and if it will have been transmitted before the person was diagnosed.

I wouldn't bring a tiny baby anywhere close to the site of a measles outbreak. Measles can be incredibly dangerous for such a young infant. Leave him in the car.

Lio · 09/03/2010 09:43

Sorry, of course your baby won't be touching a door handle, but you might, then you might touch your baby...

trouble is the car park is closed due to building work, its a 5 min walk. I read somewhere that babies have immunity from mum untill about 5 months but the situation isn't ideal. I kept the rain cover on today thinking that would help and was very quick but I am concerned.

Just called MW, she says newborn is pretty safe, and DS is due to MMR, but I could be at risk so need to call GP and see if I have been vaccinated.

I don't know if you have a mum, but if you do, she might remember if you were immunised?

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/03/2010 10:18

yes, just called her but she is out! Typical!

leave baby at door in pram.phone ahead staff met you at door with 2yo ready to go. but tbh your 2yo has been exposed to airborne droplets and likely may get measles anyway

PotPourri · 09/03/2010 10:28

What scottish mummy says. And make sure you have alcohol gel for yourself and DS to use as soon as you are outside.

scottishmummy · 09/03/2010 10:33

get 2 yo home, quick bath clothes in wmch.sanitise his hands with alcohol gel (nursery will have some)

hope not infectious

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/03/2010 11:01

DS shouldn't get it though should he?? He has had the MMR.....

mmr is considered to be @90% effective protection against measles.but no immunisation offers complete immunity

hope your son and wee baby ok.you must be worried

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 09/03/2010 11:50

GP just called me back, I have been immunised thank-goodness. Just need to sort pick up now!
