Friend is an "artist" and always going on about it at every single opportunity. To be honest this is annoying enough in itself, not the artist bit, but to keep ramming it down people's throats.....
Anyway,
What's worse, is that she judges everybody elses artistic talents or lack of.
She says that she is a "proper" artist because she went to art school and has a degree in art - apparently that makes you a "proper" artist over and above any level of talent
She also judges people by the amount of money they have made from their "art". Her "art" is computer generated images based on photos of local landmarks etc which she has been able to make money from by having printed into postcards and notepads etc which she sells in a local gift shop - we live in a little touristy seaside town. Because she has sold a bunch of postcards etc she says she is a better artist than other locals. But to my mind it's obvious, an artist who draws pictures for tourists to buy on postcards etc is always going to sell more volume of stuff than others doing obscure sculptures etc...
It's really starting to piss me off now, listening to all this shit,
AIBU or am I just a pleb who doesn't "get" art?

well, dunno much about "art" but I can recognise a "pratt" if that helps?

Your friend is what we would call a "pratt"

She's a souless twit. Many of the greatest artists sold sod all work during their lifetimes.

She sounds more like a graphic designer than an artist.

YANBU

she sounds like a nob

rofl that's what dh said, about great artists like Da Vinci who were penniless and only sold one picture in their own lifetime or whatever happened...

My eyes glaze over once she starts all this bollocks.

She says her "art" is an expression of herself or some similar shit, but actually she has sold herself out to public demand.

I thought it's like people who design birthday cards... if you are good at drawing cute bunny rabbits, and you draw cute bunny pictures which get printed onto birthday cards that is using your talent to make money. That is a world away from drawing a picture of the view from your back door which is lovely and because you felt inspired to do it... isn't it????

I a Fine Art degree and consider myself to be the finest and most talented Piss Artist of my generation and I challenge you to say otherwise! >

You want to read Bourdieu.

Art is what a group of people, recognised by other people as having the power so to do, recognise as art.

It's not, necessarily, about making money. Though that helps. Sometimes, the fact you make no money makes it more "Art" than making money. But making lots of money, selling your art to collectors*, and having it shown in proper "art" spaces (museums, galleries, etc.) is bestest.

*People who buy Art. Not quite the same as the General Public. Tend to have money.

On the other hand. I paint for pleasure and never sold a picture - but that does not make me a great artist. Or even an artist at all.

Sounds like you might have more idea about what art is than your artist friend.

Oh bloody hell, hope not going to offend anybody, I know nothing about art and whether it is good or bad!!!

I'm not going to judge who is a better artist than anyone else, and to be honest I don't really care, but I am sick of hearing about it!!!!

Isn't art in the eye of the beholder. DH's uncle is a professional artist who "exhibits" at galleries and is a member of RWS . Sometimes he paints pictures of what he wants, and other times he does commissions and he often has his paintings turned into cards to sell.
The commissions he does is probably his bread and butter, so that he can afford to produce the paintings he enjoys doing. He is well into his 80s now and still going strong!
