To replace the expensive conditioner he has wasted in the bathroom making potions? He has used nearly a whole bottle and I buy it in salon size 750ml bottles.

He is 9 BTW, and old enough to know better. He said he liked the smell

AIBU - I will go with what the MN jury think.

ah, potions I think just a chat about what he can and cant make his mixtures with would suffice

EcoMouse · 07/03/2010 21:41

YABU if it's his first potions making session.

YANBU if it isn't and you've been here before.

ShadeofViolet · 07/03/2010 21:43

We have had this before EcoMouse - with a whole toilet roll that I had to pick out of the plughole.

I wouldnt mind but he hates having his hair washed

What EcoMouse said.
If you hadn't expressly told him not to use them before his lotion potions then it's a bit on the harsh side but if he knew they were expensive and sacred and not to be messed with then YANBU to use some of his pocket money to pay for replacements (as long as they are not stupidly expensive).

differentID · 07/03/2010 21:45

then he loses is pocket money to pay for it.

ILiveinhope · 07/03/2010 21:46

I would - at 9 he old enough to know better!!!!
Whether you have had the chat or not, he should know not to help himself to stuff that does not belong to him!!

potions???? I am sick to death of potions - YANBU Our bathroom is filled with empty shampoo/bubble bath bottles and full little saucepans/tubs of stinky potions. She also likes to do experiments in the kitchen. I got into trouble last week for washing up - I'd accidentally destroyed her lastest experiment of "what happens to a piece of pasta when I leave it in a bowl of water for a fortnight...." Guess I should be proud of her early scientific genius

KurriKurri · 07/03/2010 21:47

What else was in the potion? (nosey) - at least he hasn't set up stall in the garden to sell it to the neighbours.

muppetgirl · 07/03/2010 21:47

I would say that if it happens again you'll keep some pocket money back to pay to replace.

You could suggest he buys his own liquids to make his potions out of his pocket money?

RedbinDippers · 07/03/2010 21:50

If its the first time just warn him. It sounds like he has an inquiring mind, buy him some sugar and weedkiller to play with.

ShadeofViolet · 07/03/2010 21:55

Also in the potion was a whole bottle of oilatum bath emmollient (so I will be off to get a repeat perscription tomorrow ) toothpaste and the conditioner.

I do feel a bit harsh taking his pocket money now, but I was angry at the time. I havent told him I was going to do it as I hadnt made up my mind. I am more angry my hair needs a wash and I have no nice conditioner, just crappy old Loreal Kids stuff (which he didnt touch obviously!)

Sounds an expensive potion - at nine he probably had some idea he was doing something he shouldn't, I don't think its completely unreasonable to get him to contribute to the cost of replacement.

cyb · 07/03/2010 22:09

If it makes you feel any better my ds decided to use my 3/4 full bottle of £13 bath oil for filling up and emptying games in the bath.
