That contestant on Masterchef this week was referred to as "a childrens doctor"?

What is wrong with the word paediatrician?Did they think we would all mistakenly assume that a paedophile had been selected as a contestant?

OP posts:
heQet · 06/03/2010 19:13

more likely they think people are too stupid to understand big words

differentID · 06/03/2010 19:13

I believe your assumption is correct.

NormalityBites · 06/03/2010 19:14

people ARE too stupid to understand big words

Generally.....

nickytwotimes · 06/03/2010 19:14

Bloody hell. Dumbing down indeed.

yumimummi · 06/03/2010 19:19

I think when they first introduced him they said paediatrician and I have to say I did have to laugh when the second time around it was 'children's doctor'! I thought he looked a bit odd so maybe you and differentID are correct but they did it on purpose so those of us shallow enough to judge by appearances couldn't get confused poor man - his food was good though!

lovechoc · 06/03/2010 19:34

paediatric nurses are still often referred to as childrens' nurses, so I'm guessing the same applies to childrens' doctors.

YABU who cares

zippyzapper · 06/03/2010 19:40

It is Masterchef not Mastermind....

foxinsocks · 06/03/2010 19:42

it did sound weird

it made me wonder what the hell he did

scottishmummy · 06/03/2010 19:42

ok if we are going for this literal thang
orthopaedics- bone doctor
neurologist -heid doctor
gastroenterologist- arse/stomach

YoginiBikini · 06/03/2010 19:44

I heard it and agreed ..... but..... children's hospitals are just that, not paediatric hospitals, and also paediatric/childrens nurse is very interchangeable as lovechoc says

lovechoc · 06/03/2010 19:49

I've a friend who's a 'paediatric' nurse but she refers to herself as a childrens' nurse, it's perfectly acceptable. and the doc probably doesn't mind being called a 'childrens' doctor.it's honestly not worth splitting hairs over..

4andnotout · 06/03/2010 19:53

The only thing I care about is the fact that he is from Norfolk too so I hope he wins!

fanjolina · 06/03/2010 19:56

there was an incident when a paediatrician got beaten badly as some local dumbfucks thought that meant paedophile

Minshu · 06/03/2010 20:11

The day after DD was born the mw told me the paediatrician would be coming in a couple of minutes - in bounced a little bundle of energy, announcing himself to be the "kiddie doctor". FFS... Fine for a toddler or child, but I'm an adult and a newborn is too young to understand any words, so simplifying didn't help her either. Patronising little...

lovechoc · 06/03/2010 20:17

that's the thing though about people who work in paediatrics, they tend to be bouncy happy people. they are fun fun fun! at their work whereas the rest of us find it quite irritating. My friend who is a paed nurse is actually happy all the time, in all the time I've known her she's never been upset, angry or said a bad word about anyone or anything. she is just a constantly smiley happy person!

funtimewincies · 06/03/2010 20:18

I have a similar rant every time a news-reader informs me that someone has been sent to jail (OK, gaol if I'm being generous).

Didn't people in the Wild West go to jail? I was under the impression that hardworking British criminals went to prison.

Or is that word now too tricky for my poor brain? And don't get me started on the 'yellow melons' I saw in the supermarket last week .

ShellingPeas · 06/03/2010 20:24

So if paediatricians are kiddy doctors or children's doctors what are gynaecologists called?

lovechoc · 06/03/2010 20:25

lady-bits doctors ofcourse!

or tail-end doctors...

yumimummi · 06/03/2010 20:28

lady gardeners? Or maybe that is the name for the waxing lady. time to go.

Clary · 06/03/2010 20:33

I recall the "baby doctor" being announced to me in hospital after DS1 was born.

Didn't know if I should expect a 3month old brandishing a stethoscope...

I think children's nurse or doctor is fine tho.

fanjolina · 06/03/2010 20:37

cunt doctors, shellingpeas

Doobydoo · 06/03/2010 20:44

I have been told[by family member]that I should say I am a Children's nurse and not a Paediatric nurse for the reason OP has mentionedI was stunned!

Doobydoo · 06/03/2010 20:45

Although when my friend went back to work after her 1st baby she referred to the Neurologist as the Brain doctor

lovechoc · 06/03/2010 20:49

yes Doobydoo you've got to have a sense of humour about it, seems your friend certainly has!

nighbynight · 06/03/2010 20:51

In german, things tend to be described in a straightforward sort of way
Kinder+arzt = Kinderarzt (children doctor)
In this context, it could even sound a bit poncey to make up a bastardised latin word instead???

"paediatrician" is a word made up by educated people - why not use the simple phrase "child doctor?"
