to have wanted the Doctors Surgery to tell me my child has Salmonella?

3 weeks ago I took my 1 year old to see the Doctor because he had diahraea diahrea diarrhea the squits and a temperature, a stool sample was sent away to be tested... told he had a tummy bug. The following week took him back because still having explosive nappies and for 3 days had had a temperature of over 39, asked about stool sample results, doctor couldn't find them... I was told my ds had an ear infection and given antibiotics.

3 weeks on I find out through Environmental Health phoning me to do a long questionnaire of where he has been, eaten etc that he has Salmonella. No tell a lie, I actually found out by picking up a message off my answer phone to ring them back because my son has Salmonella. I can't tell you how pissed off I am he's still not right, phoned doctors immediately to find out why they hadn't informed me and they had no knowledge of the result. Fgs why was Environmental Health the first to know before the Doctor or myself

Ha thats the way this god damn country works, always the last to know

YANBU OMGjust read this, and before all medics/lab techs roast me alive, I would say that the path lab lost or mixed up the stool sample. The The NHS labs are hopelessly unerstaffed and need more funding NOW. My SIS is a med sec and she says that it is chronic in her area. My ds has Renal Dysplasia and needs regular blood and urine tests about a good few have been lost in the years gone by. It was ok when we lived in Bristol as we lived 500 yds from the Private Nuffield Hospital with path lab on site DH's company would pay for all tests through the med insurance, those days are long gone anD we are at the mercy of the local system (as dh made redundant.) I had to pay a fortune for lab sticks to test ds's protien in wee levels. Salmonella in a baby is majorly serious and I think you need to get an explanation it is bloody inexcusable, don't be fobbed off as you have a right to know ( Iam not talking litigation here) perhaps they could redirect some of the pension fund from the disgraced senior execs who presided over the appalling hell at the Mid Staffs hospital to your local path lab. Just an idea! Seems a fair redistribution IMHO

difficultdecision · 04/03/2010 09:12

because salmonella is a 'notifiable' illness the lab probably told environmental health automatically before sending the report out to the doctor.

TotalChaos · 04/03/2010 09:18

yanbu. I suspect though it's the GP's to blame rather than the lab. Both my mum and myself (different GPs in different cities) have had GPs "sit" on significant abnormal blood test results and not bother informing us for no good reason. Fortunately in neither case did it have significant consequences. I would definite raise this with the practice manager.

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 09:28

TotalChaos good point the Practice Manager should be first port of call. OP was the doctor concerned or was he "nonchalant" re losing test results? I guess pathology had done their job as env health were alerted.

Environmental Health said they were informed he had Salmonella on the 1st, took ds back to Doctors yesterday and they still had no test results back, no report, nothing.. Another sample has now been sent off, I have been told I should have the results between 48-72 hours, as I should have had the first time. I am going to be the receptionists worst nightmare this time, I want those results asap as his nappies are still far from right.

I'm quite concerned about ds as the Doctor said, "..in most cases people make a full recovery.. he just needs lots of fluids" wtf does that mean? may he not make a full recovery? Can it sometimes not go on it's own?

Sorry took me so long to write my reply I didn't read all your posts.. The doctor was confused why he had no results there, just kept saying he didn't understand it.. Didn't phone anyone to find out why though.. just wrote on his new test that he has no results of test taken on 11th.. but I don't know why when I asked for them two weeks ago it wasn't chased up. He fully checked ds over and said he needs re-testing until it's gone.

Maybe you're right I should take it up with the Practice Manager.

bernadetteoflourdes · 04/03/2010 09:48

How busy is your practce?

MrsPixie · 04/03/2010 09:53

how awful - How would he have picked up salmonella?

sleepsforwimps · 04/03/2010 10:44

Right I now have some answers.. I have just phoned the surgery and luckily spoke to a very helpful lady who phoned the lab immediately for me. Lab says the sample is still isolated and being cultivated, therefore Environmental Health were alerted that he has Salmonella but the surgery won't receive a report/notification until their tests are completed! WTF so it isn't important to tell the parents of a 1 year old immediately on finding out that their son has Salmonella??? something is very wrong with this system.

I have now been told to phone up for his test results tomorrow as if they are clear they may have them, but if they are still positive again they won't have anything until lab tests complete.

MrsPixie There are many, many ways he might have picked it up, the list of questions EH asked me was huge.. Where I shop.. has he been to any farms.. stroked any animals... drank bottled water... eaten fish/shellfish/chicken/eggs etc etc etc... does he go to any nurseries... has he played in any playgrounds... has he eaten out anywhere... has he eaten any preprepared sandwiches... eaten from a buffet.... and so on and on....
