to think my neighbour may have stolen our kitten?

and perhaps drove off with him and dumped him somewhere far from home??

Kitten (6mos) went missing last week. He was let out at 6pm by DD (who now blames herself for him not coming back) but DH went out 30 mins later and came back an hour after that so kitten had two chances to come back in (no catflap as did not want kitty coming in with 'presents') and would not normally stay out long and it was raining. No sign of him since despite a massive search, leaflet drop etc.

Now the morning after he went missing, DD noticed neighbour coming out of his house and running to his car with a cat carrier, then driving off. When she told us this and asked whether he could have taken him, we told her not to be silly as they have a cat (and a dog)and it could be that one of them were ill.

Since then, the neighbour has taken an extraordinary interest in our search for the kitten (never usually said more than two words before - very ignorant) and has told me about of one of his cat's going missing and never coming back. This morning I said to him (to guage his reaction) that I hoped somone had not driven off with him and dumped him somewhere and he immediately said 'oh, that happens a lot round here, seen it in the newspaper, cats & dogs go missing all the time' etc and I thought that he seemed nervous and bit jumpy.

They got a dog recently and we have seen our kitten sitting on their fence seemingly sticking out his tongue while the dog goes crazy and barks like mad so are thinking that perhaps they got fed up with him and hatched a plan to get rid of him. They have never complained about him to us though.

AIBU and highly paranoid to think this? Would a person with DCs and pets themselves (our DCs are devastated about it)be capable of this do you think??

do you think his dog might have killed your kitten?

Northernlurker · 02/03/2010 10:39

Yes I think people are capable of this - people are just beastly about other people's cats.

BigMomma3 · 02/03/2010 10:40

Well the is one of those small, fluffy things and is quite young so would doubt it really.

Yes surely more likely the dog killed the kitten, they raced kitten to vet, kitten died.

StephysFamous · 02/03/2010 10:41

I think YABU, kittens shouldn't be let out in the dark alone. Yes, it is still dark at 6pm. I don't know why you would think so horribly of your neighbour,

Chluro · 02/03/2010 10:43

YABU unless you live in Cabot Cove?

Surely this sort of thing doesn't happen in your average street?

BigMomma3 · 02/03/2010 10:44

Stephys - we would not have thought anyone would be so mean - just seems too big a coincidence with him going off with a cat carrier! Also kitty should not have been out, that's why DD feels so bad thanks.

My mum blamed her neighbours for her cats dissapearance once. She was utterly convinced that there friendly staffy awfull pitt bull had killed it. She even had my Dad steal their Wheely bin so she could look for 'evidence'.

All of this was because she saw them dispose of a dog bed that was apparently 'soaked' in blood.

She was off with them for days. Especially when the young girl offered to help search for the cat.

The cat came back, perfectly unharmed about a week later. We think she may have gotten accidentially locked in some ones shed.

Their dog had cut it's nose quite badly on a tin someone threw over their wall. It needed stitches and a new dog bed. We found out later when we saw them bring their dog back from the vets, after it's check up.

My mum still feels awfull for behaving the way she did towards them, even though she never blamed them to their face.

If your instincts are telling you something you should follow them.

Thing is, cats do disappear all the time.

Perhaps the neighbour's dog did kill the kitten, or perhaps he just wandered off and got run over, or perhaps if he's a friendly kitten he followed someone home and they took him in.

If the neighbour has a cat then it's not unusual for him to have a cat carrier is it?

And why on earth would he steal it and dump it?

Tbh I do thin you're being a bit paranoid.

Morloth · 02/03/2010 12:13

Outdoor cats can have all sorts of shit happen to them. Hit by a car, wander off and find a different family, killed by a dog etc.

A bit weird you are blaming your neighbour TBH.

Is the cat microchipped?
