to think this waiter was a rude cheeky sod?

Out for dinner the other night and was paying by card, now they usually hand it over at the "add gratuity?" prompt so you can go through the options and then put your pin in, etc - this time though the waiter (who had not served us himself that night) kept hold of the card machine and asked me if I'd like to add a gratuity, to which I answered politely no, not on my card. He then pulled a face, rolled his eyes and said in quite an arsey way "oh right, ok then madam" and then handed the machine to me

Now I don't like to leave a tip on a card machine, I prefer to leave cash on the table (in some hope that it will go directly to the waiting staff rather than the till), but I don't feel I needed to explain that to him and I was a bit miffed to be actually asked if I wanted to tip and then for him to be so mardy when I said no.

AIBU to think he was being a bit necky?

YANBU. I wouldn't have left any tip after that.

StealthPolarBear · 01/03/2010 15:43

yanbu
did you leave one?

MadreInglese · 01/03/2010 15:44

we did leave a cash tip on the table because the girl who had served us was lovely

ClaireDeLoon · 01/03/2010 15:45

yanbu he was being very rude

Vinomum · 01/03/2010 15:45

YANBU at all.

'A bit necky' - is a new one on me but I love it!

Morloth · 01/03/2010 15:53

YANBU, when I did tables we never saw any of the tips that were added to bills on cards (many years ago and in a different country!). So I always tip with cash.

No tip for him though.

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 01/03/2010 15:56

Very rude I would have ask to speak to the manager

MadreInglese · 01/03/2010 15:59

knowing my luck he would have been the bloody manager

(morloth me too, that's exactly why I do it)

we don't eat out much so was wondering if it's now the done thing to push for tips

YANBU, I would have found the girl who served you and given the tip to her personally, just so the rude waiter didn't get any.

If anyone pushes for tips from me, they don't get any.

lifeas3plus1 · 01/03/2010 16:09

Yanbu. He was bloody rude.

I never tip on card because although we used to get the tips in our paychecks we used to get taxed on them so I alway's tip in cash now and I alway's hand it to the person who has been serving us.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/03/2010 16:13

cCheeky sod.

I am the same - never ever tip on card, always leave cash as it used to be used to make up waiter's wages. Now I assume that the restaurant would deduct a 20% 'admin' fee ot whatever so still leave cash.

Have many times told a waiter 'no, will leave a cash tip thanks' when the gratuity prompt comes up, and they have always been more than fine.

I would have probably got my middle aged prim look on and said 'well you have scuppered your chance for any tip now young man'.

OtterInaSkoda · 01/03/2010 16:19

YANBU at all. And I'd have had a word with the manager. And if it turned out that he was the manager I'd have contacted the proprietor. This kind of thing really pisses me off - even more so back when I was a waitress myself.

MrsChemist · 01/03/2010 16:22

GetOrf, I would love to see that. Especially because the word scuppered is underused.

shonaspurtle · 01/03/2010 16:26

YANBU I've had many waitressing jobs and as a result would never put a tip onto a card.

I'd rather the person serving me had a chance of actually pocketing the tip.

A waiter shouldn't need that spelled out to them, even if they've got an employer who doesn't use the tips to make their pay up to minimum wage.

shonaspurtle · 01/03/2010 16:27

He probably was the bloody manager and that's why he was sniffy about the prospect of you giving the tip direct to the staff.

Totally agree, cash tips only, unless it is the local Chinese/Indian where they are all the same family and all sort of "share" the business, IFYSWIM.

cruelladepoppins · 01/03/2010 19:58

I make a point of saying "I always tip in cash".

MadamDeathstare I take my hat off to your DH, that is subtle and clever!

WingedVictory · 01/03/2010 20:28

What a devious DH, MadamDeathStare! I've read a few of your other posts, and thought you might have kept your maiden name of DeathStare, but I gather from this that you hyphenated with your husband, or that you somehow had the same surname. Good show, finding a soul mate like that!

Wineonafridaynight · 01/03/2010 20:59

Not all card machines give an option for a tip. Some of them will just have the option to enter in the total amount so the waiter would need to enter the total amount you want to pay, if you see what I mean.

Still it seems rude to ask if you want to leave a tip. I have been in the situation before where I have just been given the screen to type in pin number without being asked if I want to leave a tip and asked about it. They have looked flustered, asked how much I would like to tip and then had to cancel the transaction to enter in the total amount that I wanted to pay, if you see what I mean.

bernadetteoflourdes · 02/03/2010 01:51

I would bet he was the owner as they use these on the card gratuities to pay the staff wages. No Waiter would object to this
cash tip if you go back you can borrow ds as he is a dab hand at projectle vomiting and a right good shot. "very well Madam" if you ask me
