To expect a grown woman to sit through a play without slurping from her water bottle

Can she really not wait till the interval to have a drink? It's infantile.

OP posts:
RedbinDippers · 28/02/2010 16:07

I always take a bottle of cider. Those water drinkers really piss me off.

MrsC2010 · 28/02/2010 16:11

Hmmm, White Lightning...

GothDetective · 28/02/2010 16:12

Maybe she had a sore throat.

mustrunmore · 28/02/2010 16:12

I never ever drank water in public before I got pg with ds1. Then I developed an absolute addiction to ice cold water; while pg I drank around 12 litres a day (yes was tested for gestational diabetes, and was all clear), this dropped a bit, then rose again with ds2. ds2 is now 4, and I've only recently been able to go out and about without a bottle of water in my bag. I cant even begin to describe the panic feeling I had if I didnt have water with me. It took from 2003 to now to slowly wean myself off. First from frozen water to fridge temp to room temp, then from carrying 2litre bottles to 500ml ones. I still cant imagine sitting through a play or a film without water, to me it would be barbaric.

hmc · 28/02/2010 16:12

lol, nutter alert!

southeastastra · 28/02/2010 16:12

i'd find it annoying too - i don't understand why people need constant watering.

hmc · 28/02/2010 16:14

Why would you need to 'understand' southeast? - what possible business is it of yours if someone wants to sip from a water bottle. People this intolerant should become hermit small holders in the outer hebrides

mustrunmore · 28/02/2010 16:15

Who me?! Trust me, if I could last a day without drinking I would. i remember the days when I only had a wee after breakfast and before bed!

TheFallenMadonna · 28/02/2010 16:15

People are wierd about drinking water now though. It is like they think their brains will shrivel if they go half an hour without 'rehydrating'.

bellissima · 28/02/2010 16:16

OrmRenewed - it's true! - I noticed this when I signed up as an old bag mature student. Why on earth were they all clutching water bottles for dear life?? - they couldn't all have medical conditions surely?? My sis works in a uni and confirmed that they are indeed totally essential to the modern stude.

Personally have no objections to them - just note with amusement. It's crisps and popcorn in the row behind that turns me into a frothing at the mouth monster....

runnybottom · 28/02/2010 16:16

get a fucking life. Seriously. It could not matter less.

MrsMargate · 28/02/2010 16:16

How do you know it was water OP?

Could've been vodka.

Perhaps the lady was an alcoholic and needed it. It's a disease you know.

So selfish to put YOUR needs above the needs of a lady who was clearly struggling to come to terms with her addiction....

TheFallenMadonna · 28/02/2010 16:17

It's interesting more than irritating I think hmc.

KurriKurri · 28/02/2010 16:17

mrschigur - like me you are clearly 'common'

Megatron · 28/02/2010 16:19

I agree with a PP about this being the silliest AIBU thread. People get annoyed with others drinking water? Really?

southeastastra · 28/02/2010 16:21

what play was it?

mrschigur · 28/02/2010 16:22

Kurri - as muck!
Though I rarely slurp.. I sip when thirsty or chug coke when hypo.

MrsC2010 · 28/02/2010 16:28

I suspect uni students need the water for rehydration/hangover purposes!

bellissima · 28/02/2010 16:33

We managed to nurse our hangovers for the duration of a lecture - just not made of the same stuff, studes these days

MrsC2010 · 28/02/2010 16:40

Haha, I certainly can't handle a hangover like I used to!

skihorse · 28/02/2010 16:51

YANBU. Being unable to go an hour without a drink is absolutely ridiculous. Where did all these ghastly people clutching environmentally unfriendly plastic bottles of water come from?

Blu · 28/02/2010 17:22

I would be irritated by constant rummaging for bottle and non-stop noisly slurping.

But she may have had a specific need. In which case she should have been as quiet and unobtrusive as possible.

madhairday · 28/02/2010 17:33

Hmphh.
Next time I have to swig water in public OP I will think about offending your poor little sensibilities.
Or not.

I have to, otherwise I would cough, all the time. I could do that instead if you like? Very pleasant for all concerned.

teasle · 28/02/2010 17:37

OP I think you should practise a thing called 'TOLERANCE'..? eh...eh?

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 28/02/2010 18:17

I wouldn't object to someone drinking water during a play, as long as they did it quietly, and frankly I wouldn't care whether they needed the water or just wanted it. But some sports bottles can be very noisy - they sort of slurp the air back in and the bottle crackles - and that would be very annoying if you were trying to hear what was going on on stage.

It is also pretty annoying and offputting for the actors, if there is lots of noise from the audience.

So perhaps less of the sarcasm about people's poor little sensibilities, and a little more realisation that there is a compromise, where those who need or want to drink during the play can do, as long as they are quiet - what's wrong with expecting that level of consideration??
