To be VERY annoyed every time he does this?

He's just done it again - my husband I mean - He's going upstairs to watch the news. On his way out, he turned off the light.

On the grounds that it's more relaxing.

HE finds it more relaxing to have the main light off. I don't like it. The kids don't care one way or the other!

HE'S going upstairs! He won't even be in the frigging ROOM! So why turn off the light and leave the room?

And every time he does it and I say why did you do that? You're going upstairs? He says oh, I thought you'd prefer the light off.

And I say - every time - No, I don't like the light off. I always tell you I don't like the light off.

And he says...

I know.

Lucyellensmumma, this was my exH's habit too. TV on the minute he got home.

heQet - did you used to be Hecate?

hijack over

MudandRoses · 27/02/2010 22:03

YANBU. I second the idea of turning off his telly while he's watching it. or perhaps turnt he toilet light off while he's in there doing his business ("I thought you'd prefer it, darling!"), and at any other occasion. If he gets annoyed, simply tell he now knows how it feels.

How about a remote control light switch? www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?isSearch=true&isYmal=true&fh_search=5021575580419

I installed one myself in the bedroom (so can't be that hard) and programmed my stereo remote to be able to turn it on, off and dim.

Won't change his behaviour but means you can sort it the second he's out of the room without disruption

Good luck :-)

Lucyellensmumma · 27/02/2010 22:14

my mum had one of those, trouble is not only did she keep losing he remote, whenever the batteries ran low it developed a mind of its own!! spooky!

heQet · 27/02/2010 22:21

Yes, fanjolina, I was.

Oh dear. I too cannot stand having the main light on. IN fact only put it on ever when going into dark room until I can turn the lamps on. The main light seems so harsh and random.

I would not, however, turn the light off if leaving the room. That would irritate me - would be like dh turning on the main light when leaving the room which would be a BAD THING.

fanjolina · 27/02/2010 22:31

I thought you had been! Was wondering how you had got on since your op.

heQet · 27/02/2010 22:34

Doing fine thanks. Plodding along nicely. Major attitude adjustment has been hardest thing!

BritFish · 27/02/2010 23:11

you should tell him how watching tv in the dark is bad for your eyes.
i dont know whether its true, but you could try?
is it? oohh... [bumbles off to google]

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 28/02/2010 01:03

you do need remote light switches.

either that or something that shocks his testicles the second he leaves the room

diddl · 28/02/2010 09:49

Sorry to be dim-but these men turning the light off-are they then leaving you sitting in the dark??!!

tethersend · 28/02/2010 10:02

It reminds me of a joke...

A man comes in to the room and says to his wife, "I'm going to the pub. Get your coat on."

The wife, overjoyed that he has included her in his activity replies, "Oooh, where are we going darling?"

The husband replies, "Nowhere - I'm turning the heating off."

joanne34 · 28/02/2010 10:14

Does he pay the electricity bill ? Maybe he's trying to tell you something !
I just got my gas bill in, I'm not putting it on anymore, gees - bastard British gas !

Starbear · 28/02/2010 10:17

Ha Ha!Tethersend. My aunt & uncle had a row like this in Spainish They were so aggressive and shouting at each other my DH sitting in bed read was alarmed it sounded like a full on DV, as he doesn't understand Spainish. I turned to him and said it only about a light switich. I love the way the Latins can have a noisy row then kiss & make-up moments later.

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/02/2010 10:38

My DH will turn a light on and leave the room. Where I was quite happy in the light condition I had.

Or (and this annoys me more) if I am watching a television programme (which is an unusual thing) he will get home from work and either just changevit, or ask if there's anything on. Seems s little pointless to say that I was watching something. Thank goodness for recordable digibox.

Starbear · 28/02/2010 10:44

joanne34 I knew it was wrong to sell it off in the 80's Now we are seriously pay for it!

heQet · 28/02/2010 12:13

diddl - yes! With the light from the tv and computer of course.

He actually thinks he's doing me a favour! That's the thing. It's mind boggling

joanne - we lump all money together so don't do the you pay X and I pay Y thing.

So we're decided. It him, he's unreasonable but then men are just plain odd anyway
