AIBU to expect a cleaner to know not to use a scourer on stainless steel?

And please spare me the 'oh, you've got a cleaner, you don't know you're born' comments please .

But seriously, FFS! She has scratched my beloved hob to bits! It will need replacing. I loved that hob.

I'm seriously in tears!

I had cancelled my contract with them, cos there were other issues. The boss said I could cancel the cleaner immediately though I would need to pay him for a month. I thought this very unfair, and that the cleaner should get a month's notice too. And this is the thanks I get. Great. Thank you, karma.

I didnt know that you shouldnt use bleach on Stainlees steel - no wonder my sink looks so rubbish,

Lucyellensmumma · 27/02/2010 08:55

I bet you can get it sorted - however DO NOT pay the cleaning company for the final month - i would word a very strong letter stating the damage that has been done, how much the hob cost to replace - cc to trading standards, i bert they will drop the request for a months payment pretty damned quick - they don't have a leg to stand on. Yeah you should pay the month if you are terminating the contract for your own reasons, but you are terminating because they are useless - its not the same.

Sorry about your hob - i know where you are coming from, there are very few things in my house that im precious about but its horrible to have things that mean a lot to you damaged, like you say - the hob has history - its not the hob is it, its the fact that you bought it with your DH and he did the kitchen himself etc etc, i completely understand

crankytwanky · 27/02/2010 09:21

They should be insured if it is a company, for sure.
It would be a different story if it was someone local iyswim.

FWIW, I didn't know not to scour, until I did my own! I did stop after a little while though, so only one corner is scratched. And I used to be a cleaner.

DH,however, has fooked the rest. And he bleached a gravity slicer. (£2k worth of stainless steel.)

Fluffyone · 27/02/2010 10:07

Follow it up through your insurance company. They will sort the cleaning company out.

ShoudBeDoingSomethingElse · 27/02/2010 13:28

My sister cleaned our family car (when she was a teenager) with a metal scourer - imagine my dad's rage

ShoudBeDoingSomethingElse · 27/02/2010 13:29

I would pursue it further - telephone the consumar affairs bureau and get some advice.
I would contact the company again and let them know you are pursuing it further.
Good luck

They have public liability insurance so I would suggest you tell them that they are going to have to claim for replacing it.

Lucyellensmumma · 27/02/2010 18:36

BBM, i don't think public liability would cover that because it was down to incompetence rather than an accident. Either way they should replace the hob, because its a big company rather than an idividual i'd have no qualms about small claims. But i reckon the threat of trading standards etc would be enough to have them cough up

BigBadMummy · 27/02/2010 19:00

LEM ah okay, that makes sense.

Shitemum · 27/02/2010 19:06

islandofsodor - sinks are not the same as hobs and splashbacks - they tend to be brushed steel so if you use anything other than a soft sponge on them the scratches are very obvious.

OP - i feel your pain - my mum tried to scrub a little splash of tomato off my brand new SS splashback with a scourer and ruined it. I didnt ask her to clean it and she didn't even say sorry.

thelunar66 · 27/02/2010 21:41

OP i feel your pain.. My DH used a green scourer on my lovely new hob only 1 week after getting it

I was very cross with him.

Now though, after reading this thread, I am thinking... who was the bright spark who decided that it would be a good idea to construct items that need a lot of cleaning out of such a stupid, soft, useless substance.

If I had a whole load of SS kitchen stuff I'd have gone off my head by now.
