to think that flour with a use by date of July 2010 shouldn't have sodding weevils in!

OK, I admit, it's been in the cupboard for a while although unopened. Obviously, this flour is not going to last until July 2010 and the chocolate cake I was just about to make for DH is not going to happen. Little Homepride gits.

WTF do they come from??

just developed OCD today...checking all my baking stuff in cpboard to see if its moving. We have had so many cakes recently...i hope i have eaten weevils

BlueEyeshadow · 28/02/2010 18:31

Take the flour back to the shop - I manaed to get a refund on the flour AND the other things in the cupboard the weevils got into.

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 12:16

Ooh too late, the flour is treble bagged in the bin. But, and here I might be on shaky ground... is flour sort of speckly anyway? I bought a brand new packet on Saturday and put it straight into my new box. But if I look carefully there are teeny brown specks but not moving. I'm resigning myself to the fact that things live in flour all the time but ugh!

As far as I recall (going back to agricultural days) there is an accepted level of weevils in wheat, which is then bought by flour companies, who still have an accepted weevil and weevil egg presence in the end product.

More disturbing, did you know that on average, there are 8 insect legs in a bar of chocolate? (bleurgh)

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 12:33

Oh that's it. I'm giving up eating...

I've had bother in the past with these little Sh!ts too......shudders.......they get into EVERYTHING......even had an infestation in a bag of chilli, & salt too, s not just flour or the obvious, check ALL dry store stuff.....

that said, once you've cleared them all out, there is a very simple & effective old fashioned detterant, that I found works brilliantly....simply scatter a few BAY LEAVES in your drawers & cupboards.......never had them again since

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 01/03/2010 12:39

Rockbird, is it wholewheat flour or similar?

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 12:43

No, bog standard, cake making white flour. Oh God, I haven't even thought about my bread flour!!

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 01/03/2010 13:05

I feel I really ought to go examine my flour bags now.

But I really don't want to.

muddleddaizy · 01/03/2010 13:20

I've lived in a 3rd world country and the weevels were in all the flour. We had to sieve it and get on with it, there was no more money for new flour. No-one was ill or thought twice about it!

morningpaper · 01/03/2010 13:22

lol @ weevils inspecting the packets to only use old flour

I've worked in restaurants and frankly weevils are no reason not to use flour! At least that's what I've been taught!

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 14:08

Hmmm...am I convinced? They're not big enough to hear or feel their bones crunching are they? I can't eat tinned salmon, pilchards or whitebait because of that. The thought of eating zillions of whole weevils... ('cos filleted weevils would be so much more palatable )

Point taken about third world country though.

interestinglino · 01/03/2010 14:11

I imagine weevils would be quite healthy to eat - low in fat, high in protein

Another disgusting food fact - certain species of fish (including cod and haddock) have an accepted level of worms in their flesh. Next time you eat fish and chips, have a good look at the fish, you'll probably see some little worms between the flakes of flesh (and that's why I don't eat fish and chips!) But they're Ok to eat, honest

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 14:19

Right, now that's it. Weevils in flour, insects in chocolate I can take but you've gone too far this time. How dare you mess with my fish and chips! Have you no shame? Do you not consider the hurt your words could cause??

Hey ho, I'll be a size 8 by summer at this rate.

I've had fish/worm encounters several times (always with good-quality fish).

Had one when I tried to make DS a fish pie for the first time, actually. Posted on here for advice, as I had spent £6 or something on cod fillet and it had a huge-ass worm in it which I only found once I'd poached the fillet prior to assembling the pie.

There was lots of reassurance forthcoming and links, etc., so I disposed of the flake where the worm was, triple-checked the rest of the fish flake by flake (no more worms), and went ahead with the pie. Which was delicious.

Never made it again though

Chandon · 01/03/2010 15:05

A friend of mine once had a worm in a Mc Donalds fish Burger (sick emoticon).

I know most fish has some parasites.

Do you know, most chicken or beef you eat was actually killed 3 weeks ago (or more). You cannot eat "fresh" meat as it´s too hard (rigor mortis).

Right, let´s see what else we can talk about...

Rockbird · 01/03/2010 15:41

Oh God I am going to be so so so so sick

OP posts:
Rockbird · 01/03/2010 15:42

Are there any parasites in jaffa cakes?

OP posts:
interestinglino · 01/03/2010 18:01

Jaffa cakes are pure - you're safe with them.

Although......chocolate on the top, flour on the bottom better stick to the orangey bit, just to be safe.

MrsNetz · 01/03/2010 18:54

Lol to whole thread! Do you think weevils could be responsible for my awful pancakes? What do they taste like? I saw the link but think it's best not to investigate further and pretend you are all wierdos and no such things exist!!

MrsBrendanCole · 02/03/2010 13:07

Damn it, MIL WAS right after all!!!

Eurgh!

Bettymum · 02/03/2010 13:20

I opened a brand new packet of icing sugar the other day and that was full of weevilly things.
Straight in the bin. I haven't disinfected my cupboards though, now I am strangely reluctant to do so...
Rockbird I believe Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are certified weevil free .

Fluffyone · 02/03/2010 15:42

Nooo! The only fish I eat is fish n chips. Correction, the only fish I used to eat was fish n chips. Now I don't eat fish, ever.

Tawny75 · 02/03/2010 15:53

Thats it I am never eating again. I have already given up chocolate for lent.

How about Ryvita, could they live in them (I am strangely addicted to the sesame seed ones)

CleverCircusFlea · 02/03/2010 16:10

Well I was gonna make some cherry pancakes today, but now i'm scared!
