My sister in law is planning a holiday early July before the schools break up for Summer. Her eldest currently attends a nursery attached to an infant school during the afternoons only. When she informed the nursery of her plans the headteacher told her she must write a letter to the board of governers requesting permission. Does this sound right? The child is 4 years old and starts reception this coming September. I thought compulsory education started the term after their 5th birthday???

I'm taking ds out of a school attached nursery in June for a week and had to fill in the standard school holiday request form.

Newsletter last year though did say that holiday requests would only be granted under certain circumstances during term time and that this applied to nursery children also, so I suspect that they are trying to put people off doing it.

Our nursery/preschool allows DC's to have 2 weeks away dufing term time and we don't have to pay for those weeks, anything else we can take them out but we have to pay.

I have just had a similar but much nicer experience.
Our 4 year old is in a nursery attached to out local infant school & we are going to Cornwall next week for grandpa's 70th birthday.
I called the school office to tell them & was asked to put this in writing which I did, the teacher said thankyou & told me that 'it's only nursey & not compulsory'& appreciated being told.
It's only polite to send a letter but to get permission seems a bit excessive(hmm)
