To dislike baby pics instead of your own pics on facebook

I know your baby is cute. I know you have a baby. I know your family is wonderfully happy. But you are still you - why, when you are asked for a picture of yourself for your profile pic, do you put one of your baby? One of you with the baby is bad enough - one of just the baby is the worst though. And I bet it's the same people who moan about no longer having their own identity - er, I wonder why! I like pics of your baby, I am happy for them to go in your photo area, but as your profile pic - no!

Am I being unreasonable? Probably...

I used to have a pic of me up as my profile picture on facebook, until I found some students (I'm a teacher) were stalking their teachers on facebook, looking up their profile pics and laughing at the teacher. Now I have a cute picture of my children, because there is very little they can laugh at there!

diddl · 26/02/2010 17:45

OP-does it specify to post pics of yourself?

usualsuspect · 26/02/2010 17:49

I have a picture of a hamster ..so there

GothDetective · 26/02/2010 17:52

I have a pic of my van as my profile pic, is that acceptable? Its a very cute van.

southeastastra · 26/02/2010 19:10

i am a muppet

Caitni · 26/02/2010 19:24

I think YANBU - and I speak as someone who hates photos of myself, so my profile pic is the one picture of myself I'm happy to tolerate!

Having said that, I'm 39+3 with my first so perhaps my attitude will change once i have a gorgeous baby/toddler of my own? I probably won't, as I've been so annoyed by baby bores on facebook in the past (I hide them from my news feed).

FWIW, I don't really mind people just with their kids pics as their profile pics (though that so many women hate photos of themselves), my definition of baby bores are people, mainly women, who exclusively update their statuses with pregnancy/baby stuff from the minute they have their 12 week scan. I find it self-indulgent and boring in the extreme, especially when some of these very same women have then bored me in RL with how they've lost their identities

Southwind · 26/02/2010 19:25

Ooh Im a muppet too! which muppet are you?

southeastastra · 26/02/2010 19:29

sam the eagle

5DollarShake · 26/02/2010 19:29

I have a pic of me and babe as my pic - yes, it is a bit naff to do that. In my defense, I only chose it because it's a half decent one of me, and DS is not even looking at the camera.

I don't really use FB much - have only posted one or two pics of DS and never update my status with baby-related tediousness titbits, so hopefully that redeems me somewhat.

On reflection, I don't think you're being that U.

Southwind · 26/02/2010 19:30

lol im the cookie monster

5DollarShake · 26/02/2010 19:32

Caitni - couldn't agree more.

Before I realised that you could hide people from your news feed, I had to slyly delete a couple of women as friends as their baby-related posts were getting more and more mind-numbing as the months wore on...

southeastastra · 26/02/2010 19:32

ha both blue and both souths

Tortoise · 26/02/2010 19:33

My FB profile pic is a tortoise playing on a laptop!

NoseyNooNoo · 26/02/2010 19:34

I understand where you are coming from. I usually have a picture of my children because since they were born there has hardly been a photo of me taken. DH can't be bothered to take one of me and if he does I have the children with me and it is very out of focus etc.

Some girl tagged pictures of BIL and the album appeared on all his friend's newsfeeds. The pictures were all of a pornagraphic nature (no bil had nothing to do with them!) and her profile pic was a close up of her vagina. I'd rather look at people's babies thanks.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 26/02/2010 19:44

(and yes it was her vagina not just labia)

southeastastra · 26/02/2010 19:45

i checked your profile south and you live right near me too! spooky

runnybottom · 26/02/2010 19:50

I have one of myself as a child. Is that allowable?

Southwind · 26/02/2010 22:17
