AIBU to be totally fed up with telesales people being ignorant

i am so naffed off with telesales people from every type of company from double glazing, home security, gas, electric phoning me ,normally at a really inconvenient time (like 5.30 pm)to tell me that they are coming in the area and that they would be calling. When they receive a reply like'i have a friend who does my double glazing' ,they rudely slam the phone down. Surely if you want to be a proper sales person would it not be better to be polite, just incase i decide to change my mind.
I have had gas ,united utilities and eurorseal on the phone and all i can say is ,its a good job im not your manager,as i would sack the lot of you for being so rude.

Please stop calling me because i wont buy anything over the phone.ever ever ever

Register with the TPS - they should stop calling you then.

RedOnHerHead · 24/02/2010 17:46

TPS

alypaly · 24/02/2010 17:57

does it cost

OP posts:

TPS is free to register.
Also, go ex-directory as that might cut down on some of the unwanted calls.

If you answer the phone and you hear a brief silence (about 1 second), it is invariably a telesales company. When I hear the silence, I hang up quickly.
If you really want to p* them off, just put the handset down by the phone (not back on the hook), and ignore it for 5 minutes before putting it back on the hook.

TippyTumbles · 24/02/2010 18:15

a favorite trick of mine is to put the handset right next to the tv speaker or rustle a crisp packet or something - I am registered with the tps but it doesn't appear to make any difference

SeaTrek · 24/02/2010 18:21

I am with the TPS, too, and I cannot remember that last time I had a sales call.

It took a while to fully work though.

If only there was something to stop being coming to the door (despite THREE signs asking them not to!)

alypaly · 24/02/2010 18:27

i love the way double glazing knock on your door even tho you are fully double glazed. Cheeky buggers said well what about a conservatory then...yeah if i had the money i would.

I think TPS only applies to UK call centres, hence the continued unsolicited calls. I agree - pain in the arse. I sometimes wait when I pick up to find I'm on hold, just for the pleasure of telling the bastards that if they were that interested in my custom, they'd focus on me, and me alone, before putting the phone down.

RedOnHerHead · 24/02/2010 19:06

Talking of double glazing people - my hubby laughs at the ads - as they say is now comes with free pilkington k glass - he says it's law now that they have to be pilkington k glass anyhoo, so saying its free, like its some sort of upgrade takes the proverbial!

nickytwotimes · 24/02/2010 19:09

I'm with TPS but still get the odd call from overseas or one of those bloody recorded ones.
We have caller display (free with BT and tiscali, not sure about others) so if it comes up unavailable, international or withheld we can ignore it. If it turns out to be someone we actually wanted to speak to they will leave a message anyway, so don't mind leaving it to ring.

RedbinDippers · 24/02/2010 19:14

TPS is pretty effective, failing that "Fuck Off & leave me alone" usually terminates the call quite rapidly.

luciemule · 24/02/2010 19:17

This bloke from Safestyle called us (we had a new front door from them last year) and said "Hi, so we were chatting about bla bla bla" and I said "I wasn't chatting to you about anything actually". Then I acted as though I hadn't got a clue what he was calling about and he seemed so offended I almost apologised.
With most cold callers, I annoy them by saying I'll look at the internet if I want to know anything.

dinasaw · 24/02/2010 19:40

I still tell them the house is rented. They always hang up.

RedOnHerHead · 24/02/2010 19:46

DH was using his mother's house to work from at one point (he's an architect and can't work here as there are too many distractions), he was fed up of one company ringing the same time of day every day and then sometimes more than once a day, that in the end he told them, no, she's not here, she'd dead.
They never phoned again.
I almost spat my food out when he told me!

Kaloki · 24/02/2010 19:48

If anyone ever gets a call from someone selling a conservatory, do what my friend did. Go along with it all the way through till it gets to the address, then say "Flat 5..."

Julezboo · 24/02/2010 20:05

LOL DH has had 15 calls in the last two days to his mobile from some claim company. He keeps asking them for bananas. Yesterday he rung them twice asking them for bananas because his back is sore.

They keep calling though

They must think hes bonkers lol

Kaloki · 24/02/2010 20:08

julezboo That's amazing!!

TippyTumbles · 24/02/2010 20:11

I'm so liking that Julesboo I may just have to nick that idea!

orienteerer · 24/02/2010 20:13

I registered with TPS and the calls have all stopped

AuntieMaggie · 24/02/2010 20:15

we have TPS but still get sales calls from our own banks, mobile networks etc in disguise as courtesy calls/surveys.

julezboo does he have a solution to the clothes collection bags/other crap we get posted through the door?

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 24/02/2010 20:47

YANBU. I hate it too.

Particularly the really cheery, matey ones who say "hello I'm Gary, and how are you today?".

Tempted to answer "... well since you ask I'm having a fucking awful day, the kids haven't stopped whinging all day, my husband's just walked out, I'm feeling fat, having a bad hair day, and my period's just started. But how are you?"

chegirlshadabloodynuff · 24/02/2010 21:02

YANBU at all.

I do try and be polite because I think it must be the worst job in the world, its my nightmare to be forced to take a telesales job.

But I HATE being called at home. It seems totally odd to me. Maybe because of my age? I am not ancient but I still remember early closing day, nothing open on a Sunday etc so the concept of people trying to sell you things at 8.30pm on a bank holiday/sunday is utterly inappropriate to me.

I cannot bear the cheery ones either. The start with HI, how are you today? I always say 'what do you want' which does sound rude but its not like they really care how I am. I was working in admin when this approach started to make an appearence. Stationary reps would try and sell you fax paper by acting like cheery cockney sparras. I found it really confusing at first! I thought I must know them if they were talking to me like that

I had a nightmare with SKY. I think I have told this before ... My DD was very sick. I had cancelled Sky because we couldnt afford it as i had given up work to care for her. They used to phone us weekly to try and get us to sign up again. It was annoying but I didnt have time to get het up. But then she was dx terminal. She slept downstairs and the phone was nearly next to her (nowhere else to put it) and Sky stepped up their calls to 2-3 a week.

I kept telling them no and in desperation I told them 'please stop calling, my DD is terminally ill and your calls are causing us stress' I expected them to back off. The person said

'Well we cant take you off our call list just like that. We will have to send someone round to meet you first for a chat'

I was speechless. I might as well have told them I had a touch of flu. I have never forgiven them and would NEVER have Sky again.

British Gas called me the other week (already customers and they were trying to sell one of thier boiler insurance type things). I had just sat down to MN after a long day and basically couldn't take in what she was saying. I said to her, look it's late and I haven't got the brain power to talk to you right now and words to the effect of leave me alone (politely). She started again and I said I really can't listen to you and she snapped at me 'well you're obviously interested or you wouldn't still be on the phone'

Julezboo · 24/02/2010 22:06

LOL He just said tomorrow when they call he's going to play that copycat game with them.

Say back to her whatever she says to him.

Hmm the collection bags... maybe put banana skins in them???
