Is it just the binmen in our town who can't be arsed to put the bins back at the side of the path?

It's the same every fkg week, all the bins are put tidily at the side of the path by their owners until the binmen have been along to empty them then every single one is in the middle of the path.

It's pissing me off even more now I'm pushing a pram again. it'd drive me mad if I was in a wheelchair as it wouldn't be so easy to move them.

I did write to the council about it a year or so ago, and it improved for about a month. I could write again but what would be the point??

I understand the binmen have time constraints, but surely leaving the path clear should be part of their job?

Is it just like this where we live, or this it pretty standard?

We live in a cul-de-sac with no path ... people leave their bins on the end of their drives, the binmen tend leave them in the road, not in the middle but quite often blocking the drives.

This is however my only complaint, the rest of the rubbish and recycling service here is very good.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 23/02/2010 17:51

Our bins are normally found in exactly the same places where they are left because the feckers empty them when they feel like it!

FatBoySwim · 23/02/2010 17:54

Ours won't collect unless they are in the exact spot where the orginal wheelie bins were placed when they were given to us The bin men of course, can leave them back where they like, blocking drives, pavement, or even almost on the road.

tillyfernackerpants · 23/02/2010 18:09

Yanbu but you are lucky. We don't get bins, we have to put everything out in bin bags and the rubbish generally ends up strewn down the entire road.

BetsyBoop · 23/02/2010 18:11

Just the same round here, drives me mad having to keep stop pushing the pushchair to move them - yes I could walk in the road instead, but I choose to move them as there might be someone come after me in a wheelchair who can't move them or someone blind/partially sighted who could walk into them & hurt themselves.

How hard would it be for them to keep them to the side out the way? Grrr

Must admit though one week we had a different crew on & they DID put them back carefully. I actually stopped to thank them (I think they thought I was going to kick-off about something ) Bloke said his missus always moans about it when she's out with the pram so he always makes sure he does it now. So SOME binmen are thoughtful

Furball · 23/02/2010 18:33

it's like that round here too.

They also managed to just leave the lid of my recycling box for me last week - so now i have to sort out a new recycling box.

ILIVEONBENEFITS · 23/02/2010 21:05

when the binmen have been down our street, the line of bins left seemingly all over the place in random locations actually spells "WE ARE LAZY WORKSHY SLUGGARDS WHO CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO DO THE MINIMAL EFFORT JOB WE HAVE PROPERLY" when seen from the air

.... it's a long street

Lucyellensmumma · 23/02/2010 21:54

iliveonbenefits - what a horrible judgemental post - not funny at all, i would imagine being a bin man is a shitty horrible bloody job and probably not that well paid either. They probably have minimal time in which to get round and collect all the rubbish as you can bet your life the councils have the staffing pared down to a bare minimum to save money.

ILIVEONBENEFITS · 23/02/2010 22:11

If i said merely that the binmen in my town cant be arsed to put the bins back properly would it be any less judgemental?

Get over yourself. Theyre paid to do a simple job in a particular manner and they usually fail. Often they don't take all the rubbish away leaving it blowing round the streets or leaving the paths blocked by bins because they cant be bothered to take the time to push the bin a few centimetres further across the pavement. Time might be ticking but only on how fast they can finsh for the day.
With the introduction of recycling in many parts of the country they don't even have the weight of the rubbish to worry about or the stink because we all have to wash and seperate the rubbish before they come round to get it
They manage to do it properly come christmas though don't they? They can't be arsed to do it properly the rest of the year.
Perhaps the wheelchair user/parent with a pram/schoolkid tring to get to school safely won't care about being judgemental either but to be honest it's a simple enough job that they fail to carry out properly.

Tortington · 23/02/2010 22:15

the recycling facility in my town is excellent, i dont have to sort anything i can just chuck it in. great!

the recycling binmen however leave my bin at the bottom or the street - on another street.

the 'normal' binmen kindly bring it back.

i haven't complained though becuase i have slaves children to go fetch

GypsyMoth · 23/02/2010 22:18

our binmen indulge my lorry mad ds....beep the horn and wave at him every week, much to his delight!!

once the recycling lorry worker knocked on my door as he couldnt get past my door to come and get my bi (i didnt have much in it so hadnt put it out)....they are lovely all year round....but sometimes, yes, bins are left haphazardly....most of us bring them in quick tho

MillyR · 23/02/2010 22:19

Our bin men leave the bins (old style, not wheelie) on their sides on the road, so when it is windy they roll into the path of oncoming traffic.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2010 22:24

what actually drives me really batty is fit and capable neighbours who can't be arsed to pull their bins back from across the path after they have been emptied and on to their own property.

it takes 3 steps to get it out of the way but no - they leave them obstructing the path so that disabled neighbours from down the road have to go round on to the road in their wheelchairs. They leave them there for days.
no consideration or thought for anyone but themselves.

AgentZigzag · 23/02/2010 22:25

I must admit I can see and agree with what you're saying ILive, although I wouldn't put it as strongly

A bloke comes along and puts the bins out on the roadside, then the lorry comes with two blokes wheeling the bins to the back to be mechanically emptied, they put them back. Apart from the walking, I can't see any difficulties in the job.

The job they do is important, but the way they leave the town makes it feel and look like crap, that can't be right. It would only take a little care, and no more time, to put them at the side of the pavement, it can be done because they did it here for a while, and if they have an incentive like the one Betsy said about they can do it, so they just can't give a shit what state they leave the place in IMO, what other reason is there?

ILIVEONBENEFITS · 23/02/2010 22:29

I agree Agent.I know they can do this properly because my dad was a street sweeper for years before he graduated to the bin lorries and he was pleased as punch to be doing such a cushy job after so long walking round with a cart.

He was very well paid by the way and that was way back in the 80's so goodness knows what they earn now it can't be that bad surely?

Just a little care that's all I'm saying. If Homer Simpson can do it...........

DontCallMeBaby · 23/02/2010 22:31

I do wish ours would put our bin to one side of the drive or the other, rather than right in the middle of it, so I have to get out of the car before I pull into the drive ... I know this isn't entirely reasonable of me, but in my defensive I DO always specifically leave the bin with the handle pointing outwards so they don't have to turn it around before wheeling it to their lorry. But to be fair, they don't leave them in the middle of the pavement, and they hardly sniggered at me at all that time I forgot it was bin day and had to rush out in PJs and fluffy slippers.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 23/02/2010 22:37

Arf at slippers. Lonnie Donegan moment:

Now one day while in a hurry
He missed a lady's bin
He hadn't gone but a few yards
When she chased after him
'What game do you think you're playing'
She cried right from the heart
'You've missed me...am I too late?'
'No... jump up on the cart!'

Oh! My old man's a dustman....

yes, leaving the bin across the driveway is a favourite here. I don't see why it's so difficult to put it back on the path vaguely near the wall.
