annoyed as i rang dead on 8am but it went to answering machine saying the surgery was closed-kept ringing till 8.05am when it finally had a ring tone but saying line was busy so had to wait. When someone answered at 8.10am they said all the appointments were filled.I think ds has threadworms (horrified to say the least) and i need a family persription and some advice as its a first time occurance.....

Can you not go to the pharmacy for that instead?

SPBInDisguise · 22/02/2010 08:57

Yes this irritates me too - although is rare with our surgery thankfully. DOes it have a nurse practitioner who you could ask to see instead, ours always seems to have appointments when GPs don't

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:04

yeah think i may just go to the phamacy although sometime i do think its the principle iykwim. But im waiting for the doctor to ring me back as i asked if he could just write me a perscription then as i know what it is so now i have to wait in anyhow grrrrr. Im just annoyed that i rang as soon as it opened-if id known it would of been like that id of walked up there as its not far from me.Ive rang ds school and reluctantly told them and he can't go until treated which i thought anyhow.Im not in the best of moods this has put me off kids for life lol

You don't need a doctor for threadworms: leave the doctor's appointments for people who are actually ill. A pharmacist is quite competent to deal with threadworms. Would be very annoyed if I couldn't get an appointment for a genuinely ill child because GP's time was taken up with dealing with these minor inconveniences; would be like taking your child to the GP for nits.

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:05

oh and i never ever rarely go to the doctors and the one bloody time grrrrrrrr

fernie3 · 22/02/2010 09:06

This happens to me as well, I think you can buy threadworm treatment in boots though. My daughter had them and we got it from the doctor because we were there anyway for something else that same day. If your son is on any other medicines though I would wait until tomorrow and see doctor and you cant take it if you are pregnant etc.
Dont worry about not going today its not an emergency they dont harm them.

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:07

well im sorry cory but i was advised on here to see the GP! And i would just prefer the doctor to write a perscription then see him.The last time i saw a doctor was 2 years ago so dont accuse me for wasting doctors appointments as im sure peole go for alot less.

cory · 22/02/2010 09:11

But threadworms really is a very minor thing. And exactly the sort of thing pharmacists are trained to deal with. Unless you have special health problems that mean you can't just take the usual tablet. But even then, it's not an urgent problem, so even if you have to wait a day or two for a doctor's appointment, it won't really matter, will it?

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:13

im going to clean all the bedding etc and disinfect everything and see if the doctor gets back to me.But if not then i shall go to the pharmacy and also stock up on anti-bacterial gel and god knows what else i need. I dont even know where to start.Have no idea if ive got them or his younger brother. Guess i will be starting my spring cleaning early.

This is why it's dangerous to go along with advice on here, you could you gone to a pharmacy yesterday instead of postng on here

gingernutlover · 22/02/2010 09:14

YANBU to be annoyed about not being able to see a doctor

fair enough, on this occasion it isnt an emergency and yes you probably can get the meds at the chemist without a prescription (and have to pay for them!).

I'm assuming the person on the phone didnt know this was the case though? Would they have been able to offer you an emergency appointment if it was more serious? Have they offered you an appointment for tomorrow or do you have to phone again liek you did this morning.

We've had 2 different GP's 1 of whom was very unhelpful, we moved becasue they are not all like this. Our current GP will fit you in that day as long as you phone within about an hour of them opening, they always seem busy so it seems strange that some GP's have appointments to give out whilst others don't.

LittleMrsHappy · 22/02/2010 09:17

Why do you need a prescription, the chemist sell the tablets in family dosage, for under £5 for a family of 5?

why not just buy them? instead of all this fuss.

you dont need a appointment, just go to the chemist! instructions are on the back of what to do.

gingernutlover, what our surgery does is ask people on the phone what they think their problem is: that way an urgent case can always get seen quickly and people who do not need a doctor at all can be redirected elsewhere.

bellavita · 22/02/2010 09:21

You just need to wash everything on a hot wash, use separate towels and go to the chemist.

You do not need a dr's appointment.

Ledodgy · 22/02/2010 09:21

Buy the tablets, change the beds, hoover carpets and bath/shower the children in the monring for a few days. Vaseline round the anus stops the itch.

it is a pain trying to get gps appointments I can feel your frustration but you don' need one for threadworms.

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:21

I was advised to go to the GP on another thread to get a family perscription im annoyed i couldn't get an appointment when ringing so early-i realise it isn't urgent but it could of been thats the point.

The fact ds has threadworms and at school means i need to get him treated today as he can't attend school whether that be from the doctor of pharmiscist i don't really care as long as he gets the treament. This is the first time we have had this and im worried he may had it for a while but ive blamed it on poor bum wiping so anxious to get it sorted and advice. Im sure if he gets it again (pray to god he doesn't) i will be yeah its just worms its nothing.I really do not take my family to the doctors for minor things its only because i was advised and didnt know much about it that i rang.

I cannot get a non emergency appointment at my GP's on the same day. I thought that was pretty common tbh.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 22/02/2010 09:22

Don't panic ! We've had them several times.

Get Ovex family pack from the pharmacy, wash his pyjamas and bedding, and towels. Make sure his fingernails are kept short (most important - the eggs hang about there when they scratch their bums) and that he washes hands after going to the loo.

Make sure you wash fruit and veg before eating in future

Ledodgy · 22/02/2010 09:23

A family prescription will cost more than the family box of tablets as you'd have to pay for yours and your dh's script.

allthreerolledintoone · 22/02/2010 09:23

i only spotted it last night or else i would of gone to the pharmacist yesterday. I posted last night as i was a bit freaked out tbh yuck!

OP posts:
Jamieandhismagictorch · 22/02/2010 09:23

Also, get wet wipes for everyone to wipe their bums with.

MiladyDeWinter · 22/02/2010 09:24

My sister is always doing this, making my elderly Dad get up and queue up so that she never has to pay for OTC stuff. Calpol, nappy cream, you name it. If she can get it on prescription she'd rather take up an appointment and doesn't even have the bother of queuing.

Not suggesting you're like this at all since you rarely use the GP, I'm just saying why it becomes difficult for everyone when this happens.

I can never get an appointment by phone, I have to drag sick toddler out in the cold first thing even though we've been up all night, queue and pray that my older child gets to school on time.

Ovex for all and change the sheets.

EcoMouse · 22/02/2010 09:24

Allthree, can you request a GP 'callback'?

This is what they tend to encourage at our surgery when the problem is a suspected common ailment. They will provide prescriptions on the basis of a phone consultation too.
