To my shame I'm watching 'Bridezillas' and have heard it used 5 fucking times so far.

It comes from mongol ie DS donkey. It's an utterly hideous expression. Awful. I pick people up if I hear them saying (nicely in case they don't know where it comes from).

LadyT - I assume it's like horses being handicapped in races in order to even up the race - the idea is that someone has been slowed down in some way by an external agency.
To be honest, I actually think that the word 'handicapped' fits in better with the social model of disability than the word 'disabled'.
