To have told dd that pancake day is today?

We got home from skiing at about 5 last night, dh said don't forget it's shrove Tuesday. DD's ears pricked up and she asked what that was. I said it depends on whether your dad got a lemon or not. He hadn't so I said that shrove tuesday was not a special day apart from being the one before pancake day.
She is really looking forward to pancakes tonight. Was I unreasonable to lie? There was no chance of getting any sort of citrus fruit as our local shop closes at 4.30 and we don't have 24 hours shopping. Luckily she has little concept of what pancake day is all about as she's never lived in the UK nor has she ever been there for this day of days.

It doesn't really matter but I would tell her the truth so she doesn't get confused later on and get upset after insisting to her friends that pancake day is the day after

traumaqueen · 17/02/2010 08:53

you are a Very Bad Mother. I have never ever done anything like this at all. and i am sure nobody else has either . on your head be it...

ConnieComplaint · 17/02/2010 08:56

DH made some pancakes yesterday as he was off work, but they were all gone by the time I got hom so we're making more tonight... so you didn't lie - it is pancake day (in our houses anyway!!)

My bro in law told my niece that it was steak sausage tuesday as he hadn't any ingredients to make her pancakes... but he had 1lb of steak sausages in the fridge... dh again came to the rescue & made her some!!

heQet · 17/02/2010 08:58

Don't worry about it. I assume she's quite young?

When it comes around next year, if she says anything, deny all knowledge

"No, I don't know where you got that from..."

That is nowhere near the worst thing I've ever done (fractured skull, almost severed toe, supsected dengue fever.......)colonel, she won't tell her friends anything, her memory is rubbish except for things that will benefit her. She told me this morning that she wanted pancakes with nutella for breakfast. She got shreddies. I reallyhope dh remembers the lemon, he has taken her skiing this morning, my arse is broken from falling over four times in the snow.

What is a steak sausage? It sounds somewhat risque or is that just my purile mind?
DD is 8.9, but, as I said, has never lie in the UK so is pretty much unaware of stuff like pancake day, guy fawkes etc.

kreech out of curiosity, where do you live?

I would think that any christian country would have some concept of shrove Tuesday. Does she have any concept of Easter or Lent. I wouldn't have thought that it was unique to the UK.

Sorry I,m not being critical. Just read this back and it sounds a bit like that.

My niece lives in China and is not particularly religious so maybe her 3 DD's don't know anything about it either.

We live in an uber catholic area of Switzerland, instead of pancake day, lent is started with a carnival (or an orgy of excess which is completely out of charachter for the Swiss) so she has no idea. She loves the idea of being 'english', but since she has only ever been to the UK on holiday she doesn't really understand it.

OK now I understand.Another one of nieces is thinking of moving to Switzerland for at least 3 years. Now lives in OZ. Has just started researching the country,.

Is going on holidays in July for 4 weeks to check everything out hoping to start school year in September.

She's going to be checking out the cost of living, housing, etc. Has a teaching contract for 3 years.

Has to let them know by end of July.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/02/2010 11:26

Coralanne, tell her to really check carefully. I don't know where she is considering, but, IME it is one of the most expensive countries in the world to live. Unless her contract pays for her housing and health care, she could well struggle. Tax is low (where we live it is 7%) but that is swallowed by the cost of living. Different area's of Switzerland cost different prices, the canton next to us sells petrol at about 10 rappen a litre cheaper than ours. Food costs can vary too.

Thanks, Not sure if she has factored in the cost of health care. Have to ask my DS.

Not sure which area she will be going to. She did spend some time in Switzerland about 10 years ago.

GothDetective · 17/02/2010 11:35

I've told dd it's Pancake Day today as we were out last night.

satc2bringiton · 17/02/2010 11:39

I don't know why parents are so worried about this kind of thing. Just say you don't have a lemon and we'll have pancakes tomorrow, it really won't kill them

fembear · 17/02/2010 11:41

"instead of pancake day, lent is started with a carnival (or an orgy of excess which is completely out of charachter for the Swiss)"

Don't you realise that a pancake is what passes for 'an orgy of excess' in Blighty?

I suppose it is the former, quaint old english custom. She and her dd are christian, but they don't go in for the giving stuff up for lent.
She doesn't care about much apart from getting her gob round some sugar and lemon (mainly the sugar obviously)
i really did lol at fembear. Thanks.

If you are being unreasonable then I am being very very unreasonable, because I didn't tell mine it was Pancake Tuesday. I did get the lemon etc, but then after tea I thought, 'hang on a minute, nobody's mentioned it .....'.

Given that a) I was exhausted and b) it's a constant battle to stop them stuffing their faces with sugar, I thought I'd just wait and see if anyone remembered. Nobody did. Though ds is currently out with friends and I expect someone will enlighten him ...
