I was doing the shopping in Sainsbury's with my 21 month old dd in the trolley seat. She has got a cold at the moment so has a continuously runny nose. I was wiping it every couple of minutes all the way round the shop

When I got to the checkout, and was packing the shopping into the bags (ie had my hands full), the staff member on the checkout looked at dd, he saw she had a snotty nose, and then he said to me, in a very condescending way, "Do you want to wipe her nose?"

I replied "No thanks, I'm leaving it to dry and I'll pick it off later!"

I think this was cheeky and unnecessary.

she probably didn't mean it that way, chill

compo · 16/02/2010 13:43

she was probably being kind ie, it's fine to stop for a minute to wipe it
bit ed at your snotty remark, no pun intended

usualsuspect · 16/02/2010 13:43

Probably meant shall I stop scanning for a minute so you can wipe it

WeddingDaze · 16/02/2010 13:44

I'd have laughed if i were the checkout operator, i think unless she had a tone, that she was offering to stop scanning for a sec so you could wipe.

ktbeau · 16/02/2010 13:46

He had finished scanning and was sitting there watching me pack. If he'd offered to pack while I did it (or just been helping), it would've been better.

I probably am being U but he said it in a really horrid way.

If He had attitude then no YWNBU.

compo · 16/02/2010 13:47

well working with the public you can get a bit paranoid about catching all sorts of olds coughs etc every 5 minutes
I would havew wiped it as soon as I saw it tbh

Sproggle · 16/02/2010 13:48
Biscuit
usualsuspect · 16/02/2010 13:49

nowt worse then other kids snotty noses tbh ..sorry

ktbeau · 16/02/2010 13:49

OK, think I might be overreacting.

YABU but quite funny with it!

diddl · 16/02/2010 13:58

Yes OP, I think what you said was cheeky & unnecessary.

Poor guy probably thought you were rushing to pack & deliberately leaving your daughter´s dirty nose.

I think it was really kind of him tbh.

claw3 · 16/02/2010 14:03

Dont worry your dd will soon be old enough to cuff it, silvery snail trail!

kinnies · 16/02/2010 14:15

I'd be pissed off if he had said it in an arsey way.
I'd have told him to mind his own. Espesh is he was jus watching me pack bags and not helping at all!

Vivia · 16/02/2010 14:30

She was just telling you to take your time! Jesus. Your reply was stomach-turning and not very respectful to your child. YABVU and remarkably rude.

Vivia · 16/02/2010 14:34

He, not she

ktbeau · 16/02/2010 14:59

I don't think my child felt disrespected by my remark Vivia, she understands my sense of humour and was definately aware that I was adressing the member of staff in question. She is also aware that I am a very attentive mother but thanks for your concern I'll ask her how she felt when she's old enough to understand the question.

IME its the checkout yoofs who are snotty, they sit there wiping their noses on their sleeves, blowing into their disintegrating paper hankies and carrying on handling my groceries, makes me feel ill sometimes!

parakeet · 16/02/2010 16:10

Can't believe some of the comments telling you off for this. Your retort made me laugh - and I shall store it up for future use.
