... when I am bottle feeding. I know I am being deliberately obtuse, but people I hardly know am asking me. To start with, when I said 'no', people then wanted to know why not and would tell me all about what happened to them. From close friends, greatly appreciated. From near strangers, not so welcome. So technically I do feed him myself, using my own hands.

Disclaimer: It is mostly elderly women who phrase the question like this because they don't like saying 'breast' (giggle giggle), so I feel justified in my response.

Just say "No, the neighbours feed him".

I used to say yes when people asked me if I was breastfeeding, even though I wasn't, because here in Spain it seems to be ok for random strangers to then ask "Why not?" "But you do know it's best for baby, don't you?", even a (male) bank teller ffs. Not good for my mental health at the time.

Gosh, you all make me feel so guilty. I do think YABU but only because my response would be to tell whoever was inquiring to piss off and mind their own business. I think you're being far too nice.

Seriously AANA- I was utterly at the time, until the penny finally dropped! A couple of other mums have heard the expression too.
