I'm not convinced by this 'nits like clean hair' business.

My dd gets them and she is a filthy little urchin who considers yesterday's weetabix a chic hair accessory.

I bet it's something they say to make us all feel better.

CY, I didn't know they called state schools public schools in the US. Public schools here are private schools.

How confusing. Us, not you. But then you say 'could care less' which doesn't make sense to me either. Does anybody speak plain English? Any schools teach that?

borderslass · 13/02/2010 18:09

my youngest never had them until she was about 9 when a new girl came to school ALL the kids seem to have problems then, her parents never bothered checking or if they did didn't treat her.
My sister works as a TA and has noticed it a few times on particular children one girl a couple of years ago told her 'yes I know I have nits my mum will do my bath and hair tonight' sis replied 'treat it' girl 'no just wash it' they can't do anything about it except send letters home to entire class.

DD is at a private school and both her and me have had them nearly constantly since December. I have told the school and they still haven't sent out letters.

The woman is talking bollox.

Well, my kid doesn't get nits and goes to a private school. So it must be true.

And here I was thinking it was the buzzcut...

We've only had the one episode of headlice, and they don't seem to be an issue where we live now (no rules of having your hair up etc).

It's not so much that headlice "like" clean hair, more that they are not a consequence of dirty hair. There used to be a very strong view that really only poor children had nits and it was because they didn't wash. So when children did get headlice it was felt to be pretty much their own fault, and a fair amount of bullying went on. This is probably when the OP's acquaintance was coming from.

Now there is a correlation between children who are neglected and headlice, because their parents simply aren't going to bother with the hassle of treatment, and may well not even notice that they have headlice, or care that they are scratching. It is unlikely that this group of children are highly represented at private schools (but then they are also the children most likely to miss out on school full stop).

Totally agree with TiggyR - the woman is either monumentally stupid or utterly deluded. As so many others have said, nits like CLEAN hair and do not discriminate as to whether the head they inhabit is privately or state educated. Probably nouveau - money but no class or sense.
Whoops - sorry - there go my opinions again...
