to think a lot of threads are made up?

I am probably unreasonable - and maybe my spidey senses tingle just a little too often, but surely some people just have far too much time on their hands to make up ridiculous stories. Eg breastfeeding their dog! OR those threads where they 'drip feed' details about incest, drug taking, then dumping their partner.

This annoys me because I know there really are people who need emotional support and help, so how do you tell the genuine from the fantasist?

BTW - I am new to this posting malarkey, but I have been reading MN for months.

Be kind and gentle with me but no hugs!

A lot of Mnetters are pretty wise to fibs.
But I think sometimes made-up threads can spark a good discussion anyway.
Sort of like how you know that some 'You've been framed' videos are set up, but they're funny anyway.

eurughghghghgh, that is horrible madamdeathstare.

most of it's too mundane to be made up imo. the comments about the mundane are funny, but the guts of most threads seems so normal to me. unless we've been reading totally different threads.

once i started an aibu about my son peeing in a cup, and i got the message loud and loud, i was being U, but I was accused of making it all up. as if i'd make up something so paedestrian.

larks35 · 12/02/2010 20:43

I'm fairly new to all this too, but have realised that AIBU is an area for argumenative banter/banterish arguments or arguments/downright bloodbaths. I think that if I needed proper emotional support I would go to a different place. Mumsnet has lots of other Talk Topics. I quite like AIBU cos it is a bit silly at times

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 20:45

Of course some threads are made up ..its the internet you can be who ever you want

cornsilk · 12/02/2010 20:47

I think folk worry too much about this. Trolls are rare - one or two a year I think?? I namechanged last week for advice - namechanged as situation was recognisable. Someone came on and mentioned the boxroom i.e. boxroom troll as it was my first post under that name. I still got the advice I needed which was great but it's a shame that posters are so wary.

thehillsarealive · 12/02/2010 20:48

I agree and have been reading AIBU for months and months when i have been pissed off with things or just for a laugh when the husband is working late. No doubt in time I will 'learn' quickly when to shout troll and when to shurrup.

I also have a question about infamous trolls on here, is Bonsoir the same person as Bonsior Anna and similar names or are these all different people?

breastfeeding the dog haaaaaaaaaaaaa

i once tried to troll as a tennis junkie who got spanked by by a raquet

no one bit.

since then i give up

cornsilk · 12/02/2010 20:50

Custy that sounds fun!

cornsilk · 12/02/2010 20:50

hills are alive - I think Bonsoir is Bonsoir Anna.

BitOfFun · 12/02/2010 20:56

There is a very prolific troll who has been here for years-I think it's JudgeFlounce actually- and he has little flurries, probably when he's stressed, so that it seems like about a third of all the emotional trauma threads are by him at points. He is quiet at the moment though.

Then there's The Boxroom Troll, who I think used to be a regular with a 'normal' persona. She clearly has issues with boundaries and sounds a bit ill/unhappy.

Then there are the funny ones. They are my favourite.

cornsilk · 12/02/2010 20:58

Yes the funny ones are great. I particularly liked the husband with the kitchen cutlery one. And the boy locked in the stockcuboard during the fire drill.

Tortington · 12/02/2010 20:59

i think there needs to be a rash of trollism. however, how not fucked an i be to go into profile and fuck about? i might try though in a bit. tning is i always get sussed becuase i have no grammar and spell like shit

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 20:59

I think people stress to much about trolls ...

BitOfFun · 12/02/2010 21:04

I don't stress about trolls at all- I just love to poke 'em.

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 21:08

Seems an awful lot of effort goes in to troll spotting sometimes ..who can be arsed really

thehillsarealive · 12/02/2010 21:36

bit of fun - thanks. you make me laugh in your troll poking (ooer)

I dont stress about trolls, especially not the funny ones like the breastfed dog, but the ones where "my incestuous relationship with my brother has been found out" ala Brookside in the 80's do get my goat a tad.

breastfeeding the dog? you have got to link to these threads you mention in your OP.

trolls - who cares? unless they are trying to con money out of people, or trying to get people to meet with them in isolated places, why bother about them?

People could be lying about anything, from the outrageous to the deathly dull. There's no way of knowing. And I don't think it's as easy as people think it is to tell what's true and what's not.

I think just take posts at face value, unless they are asking for cash or young single mums to go and meet them in a field!
