to think this is taking "room for growth" to a ridiculous level?

Saw a young girl today on a school trip. Would guess it was a private school from the type of uniform it was.... she was wearing a blazer which came down to her knees and had the sleeves rolled up (in Miami Vice style). The poor thing looked like she was dressing up in an adult's jacket.

I'm sure the uniform is expensive so can understand the need to get it a bit big but....

Maybe the child didn't care but I still remember how embarrassing it was as a child to have clothes that were "wrong" in one way or another.

Bet it's a hand-me-down Oh, the curse of having older siblings!

DecorHate · 12/02/2010 17:49

Looked new tbh - it was a really lovely unusual uniform, just spoiled by the dressing-up effect!

I remember starting senior school an having to wear my older sisters blazer.
It was huge! My mum said I'd grow into it . I said I bloody hoped not! I was a size 12, I'm not even a size 12 now!!

These were primary school kids - my dd at secondary has an expensive blazer which I hope will last her for a few years. These were 8/9 year olds

Are you sure this isn't the latest fashion statement?? There seems to be a bit of a trend round here for over size jackets and rolled up sleeves???

emsyj · 12/02/2010 18:13

Wool blazers are extortionately expensive, and blazers for posh private primary schools are very often wool, so YABU. [used to work in John Lewis schoolwear dept and have seen many horrified parents' faces when they saw price of wool blazers and so sold them giant ones to last as long as possible emoticon]

I am going with GoldenTomato, there do seem to be quite a few girls around with extra long jumpers which are rolled up at the sleeves atm.

As far as fashion statements go, at least this one results in a nice warm back?

Could it be that they needed to wear a blazer/jacket for the trip and she had forgotten hers and therefore was wearing one out of the stores???

ClaraJo · 12/02/2010 18:39

My daughter's blazer is from the school second-hand shop. She moaned about having 2nd hand stuff until I persuaded her to try on a new blazer to show her what a berk (coat-hanger shoulders) she looked - worked a treat.

I hate children in huge clothes too, a little too big if inbetween sizes I can understand but not huge oversizing.

DecorHate · 13/02/2010 09:52

No the children were to young & the school too posh for it to have been a fashion statement thing. Yes lots of the other girls had blazers with plenty of room for growth but this girl's stood out!

Emmsy, surely if you are forking out thousands per term for a private school, then you should be able to afford the blazer/have budgeted for the fact that you can't buy the uniform at the supermarket?

Our older children at private schools all had 100% second hand uniform. I did buy slightly large blazers recently for the younger two but exactly the issue you raised I made sure not so big would look ludicrous. From memory it was £70 per twin!
