To cut my pork pie into quarters, and pick out the jelly?

...before eating the rest of the pie. I am sure the jelly must have a very important function, but it makes me shudder.

YANBU - the jelly in pork pie is the work of the devil (as is skin on custard/rice pudding/hot milk, fat on meat etc.

piprabbit · 11/02/2010 00:25

Noooooo - the jelly is the best bit.

I would happily pick out the meat and just eat the jelly and pastry (esp. on a lovely melton mowbray pie) - yummy.

coldtits · 11/02/2010 00:31

As a resident of Melton Mowbray, I can sincerely tell you that the jelly is for your favourite hunting dog. That's why it's there.

Seriously, NOBODY eats the jelly. It's grim.

piprabbit · 11/02/2010 00:32

But it tastes nice. .

My very first job was making pork pies. They were very good indeed, no shite bits; all meat was lean, recognisable muscle.

However.

The jelly was poured in out of an encrusted metal jug, AFTER we'd stabbed the top of the pie with a pointed wooden stick. Also jelly encrusted.

I do not like jelly in pies, nor even pork pies now.

Making black puddings did not put me off, though.

Mmmmmm. Hot blood.

squashedfrogs · 11/02/2010 08:47

YABU the jelly is yummy

BouncingTurtle · 11/02/2010 08:48

YANBU the jelly is foul.
Actually I would only eat the meat as I don't like the pastry - always find it far too heavy!

southeastastra · 11/02/2010 08:51

i quite like the jelly bit too, you don't get much these days.

i do find pork pies repeat on you though

Ponymum · 11/02/2010 09:05

At first I had exactly the same reaction as you. But then we moved to a very foody country area and I find it's a different story with really good pork pies from local fancy butchers and delis. I have started to appreciate the jelly as part of the whole pork pie experience.

Pies must have thick crusty lardy pastry, lovely textured top quality meat, and a thin little bit of nice jelly to round it off. Honestly it makes such a difference if they are really nice ones. I would still avoid the jelly in an ordinary one, and in fact I just couldn't go there now that I've had the good stuff.

I'm hoping that everyone down south is howling with laughter that we are even having this conversation. They just wouldn't understand.

diddl · 11/02/2010 09:07

And the repeat never tastes as good!

The jelly is awful imo.

YoureGorgeous · 11/02/2010 09:08

i lov epork pie and chutney
tesco finest mini ones are my fave

Rachiesparrow · 11/02/2010 10:11

Yanbu. The jelly is vile. I also like to cut mine into quarters, although when I was pregnant I just ate the little ones practically whole.

MamaVoo · 11/02/2010 10:24

YANBU. The jelly is foul and evil.

I like my pork pie cut in half and dipped in salad cream. It's the only reason that salad cream exists IMO.

Phew, was starting to feel like a very lonely jelly eater last night.

Now salad cream - that another matter entirely
