so, I've gone back to commuting, haven't done it since I was in my early 30s, and yes, as a woman in her late 40s, I'm one of the more mature people on the 8.25 into London. I never get a seat. I don't look that old, fragile, stunningly attractive or, obviously, pregnant. A mere 12 days into the job, I have been offered a seat 5 times. What is going on?

It's always a man of my own age or slightly older. Very pleasantly done, with charm, clearly well meant. I accepted today, but usually I say no, with a grin and a 'well, we're the same age, but thank you anyway'.

AIBU to feel ambivalent and confused about this, or should I just sink gracefully into the seat offered and accept my dowager status?

are you sure you don't look pregnant

junglist1 · 08/02/2010 17:53

I've put on weight recently and a man did offer his seat to me (I'm only 31 so wasn't an age thing at all). I accepted it and put my hand on my belly the way I used to when I was preggie. He would have been so embarrased otherwise!!!!

just sink in and enjoy

Having done commuter trains into London in my former life I'd smile and thank them and get comfy

I was offered a seat this evening on packed tube. I was a bit . I know I look a little worn at the moment and I was quite tired but I'm sure I was in better shape than the chap who offered it to me.

I did remember my manners and say that it was very kind thank you, I am just going one stop.

Tis nice though.

I was as pleased as punch with my 10 year old ds the other day as he jumped up to hold a door open for a lady struggling carrying some boxes

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2010 21:46

that is a sign of good upbringing!

Accept graciously, otherwise they feel foolish and chivalry will die out altogether.
