to think mothercare are a bit stupid

Walking past mothercare they have an advert in their window designed to look like a "baby on board" sign.

It is a yellow diamond with "not got a baby on board? work for us" (or similar) in large letters.

I did a double take as I walked past and then noticed it then says in much smaller letters that mothercare also employs people that aren't parents (the spotty 12 year olds in my branch would be enough indication of that fact - however I digress!)

Basically the advert looked like it was saying you can work for us as long as you are not pregnant - AIBU to think this is a pretty stupid advert or AIBU (or just mad and pedantic)

My sister didn't understand why I would be bothered by it.....

Like your sister, I'm not bothered by it and don't really understand why you are.

Surely it's just a way of widening it's appeal to prospective employees who might otherwise dismiss it as an option assuming that you need to have special baby skills or be a parent to work there.

I agree with you Nancy - bit stupid as can easily be misconstrued as discriminating against pregnant women working - obviously numpty Friday when they chose to go with this!

differentID · 08/02/2010 15:40

All that sign means is that you do not have to have had children to work for mothercare. There are a lot of people who think that you need to know all about babies or be parents, but you don't and I really don't know why you have a bee in your bonnet!

Have you actually sent an e-mail to mothercare head office to explain your concerns or are you just content to complain on here?

NestaFiesta · 08/02/2010 16:26

My local mothercare shop is bit stupid because its on two floors but hasn't got a lift. All the big expensive items are upstairs and nobody with a pram or pushchair can get up there.

RE: Baby on board sign- YANBU- its a bit confusing and could give the wrong impression.

londonmackem · 08/02/2010 16:29

It doesn't bother me hugely but I do see your point. Nor do i think you should have children to work there - just a vague clue about anything.

When being measured for a nursing bra I didn't expect the young lady half my age to be reading the instructions on the back of the packet - I could manage that myself!

RockbirdandHerSpork · 08/02/2010 16:35

I think you'd have to be pretty dense to assume they wouldn't emply you if you were pregnant. It's a play on the sign, that was probably the best way they could word it but still keep the joke.

BertieBotts · 08/02/2010 16:39

The sign actually says "No baby on board" - I agree it looks like an instruction/prohibition of parents! They should have at least put a question mark on it.

But TBH if I was actually looking for a job there I would read it a bit more carefully anyway.

fernie3 · 08/02/2010 17:21

Its a bit odd but i think most people would realise it was just a bad advert rather than anything more.

MorrisZapp · 08/02/2010 17:24

Sounds like a perfectly good way of getting the point across to me.

nancydrewrocks · 08/02/2010 17:39

It's not that it bothers me per se I just think it is particularly stupid! In an age where there are still plenty of employers who admit openly in direct contravention of the law that they would not employ a woman who is of child bearing age I think it shows thoughtlessness.

Having said that I am prepared to be told I over thought the matter!
