To send dd1 to school in the morning?

She was sick in the early hours of this morning. She hasn't been sick since. She has no temperature and doesn't look ill. Dd2 is very, very ill (suspected swine flu).

Normally I'd just let her have the day off, but I have had trouble with the school wrt her attendance last year. She had a bowel condition that required a lot of medical appointments and several days off with diarrhoea. The school believe that I was keeping her off unnecessarily, even though they have verified appointment times with the GPs.

This means that every time she is off they send the EWO round to our house.

I feel awful sending her when she is not 100% but imo she is probably well enough to go and I know the EWO will think she is well enough to go.

Hmm what if it is a tummy bug? Shouldn't she be off for 48 hrs afterwards?

The school prob has a wider attendance issue and is clamping down excessively, you must do what is right for your children not what they believe to be right.

StephysFamous · 07/02/2010 21:45

I'm a bit over this. See how she is in the morning but if she appears to be fine send her to school. Out of interest what bowel condition does she have? My young sister has Crohns, just being nosey there.

gingernutlover · 07/02/2010 21:46

has she eaten etc?

if I was you I would take her in the morning and tell the teacher what happened including about your other dd having swine flu.

If they insist on you taking her home (which they could becasue most schools have a 48 hours clear rule) then ask the head to sign something that says she has advised you to keep dd home. I very much doubt they would then send the EWO round!

heQet · 07/02/2010 21:46

You're not supposed to send them in for 24 hours after they've vomited, so if she's not sick again, you should send her in. If she vomits at school they'll send her home. Maybe it's got to that stage - send her regardless and wait for the phone call!!! Except that's really unfair on her.

What do they want you to do? Send her when she's got diarrhoea? Or are they suggesting you are lying? You need to ask them.

Will have been 24 hours, with no other symptoms either. Some schools only say 24 hours anyway.

You say she is not 100% - in what way is she not quite well?

How many times was she sick?

gingernutlover · 07/02/2010 21:48

heQuet

the rule at most schools and nurseries now is 48 hours, it increased recently

heQet · 07/02/2010 21:49

did it? they are still saying 24 hours at my kids school. I wonder why they've not changed it. Do you suppose I'd sound like a twat trying to tell them their job if I told them it's changed?

bibbitybobbityhat · 07/02/2010 21:50

Our school (and many others) says 48 hours. I wish there could be a consensus on this.

Stephys they are not sure yet. She gets constipated a lot and then ends up with dirroreah, which the doctors say is 'overflow' caused by the constipation. Atm she has Senna and another laxitive to take if/when she becomes constipated and if it still happens often they are going to look into to it further to determine a cause. The school has this in writing from her specialist.

Ginger, they sent an EWO last time she was off with sickness for just one day.

No she hasn't eaten much, but did manage a chocolate digestive about an hour ago and has kept that down. However she did nibble at it rather than wolf down three or four like she normally would.

The school has a very good attendance rate afaik, one of the top in the town. Their over zealousness is probably why.

It also depends on why she was sick.

Sometimes you can vomit without actually being ill can't you? My DD has done this in the past, and had no signs of illness at all.

It relly does depend on your child and what you know they are like, and f the symptoms.

Obviously if it is a tummy bug then she needs to be off, according to your school's policy.

ShinyAndNew · 07/02/2010 21:55

She is not 100% as she has just laid about all day. Normally she is very active, even when ill. She was sick twice. DD2 has not stopped vomiting for almost three days now, along with v high temp and lethargic.

Categorically it is 48 hours after last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. I work for nhs direct and it's something we have to inform patients about if they have d&v. However, my own opinion here, if its just something that disagreed with her food wise, and a one off episode of vomiting not related to gastro enteritis no reason to keep off school.

ShinyAndNew · 07/02/2010 21:59

She didn't eat much yesterday either, before she was sick. However DH did catch her eating pistashio shells. She thought they were nuts. So could they have made her sick?

I'd been presuming she had what dd2 has but not as bad.

If she is acting unwell and has been sick in the last 48 hours I would keep her off. I had the same dillema last week my daughter has had alot of time of and she was slightly unwell in the morning (no temp of anything but quite a bad cough) .I sent her in the school phoned me up and asked me to go and get her, the lady who called seemed in quite a mood that I had sent her in even though the school have told me nto to keep her home as much -- not entirely sure what i can do to win here!
