She's 10 months old and only just started sleeping through. I'm knackered. Is it better just to rip the plaster off and do it all now? Am I mad?

Think we started when PFB was 11months-we wanted a 2yr gap.

Ended up with a 21month gap as it happened pretty quickly!

It´s great with a toddler & a newborn.

One advantage-they both often napped at the same time in the afternoon-so I could join them.

Also, when bfeeding baby, toddler would be happy to cuddle up & look at a book or sit nearby with a few toys.

We have a 18 month gap, and it's perfect, for us anyway! They play so well together (are 5.25 and 3.75 now) and enjoy the same things. Sure it's hard to start with, but it would be whatever the gap was tbh I think!

We have a 20 month gap and ditto what everyone else said - it can be hard but also wonderful.

If I had my time again I would do it all exactly the same way. I love how close the DCs are and there are lots of minor extra benefits I never thought of like they are both old enough to watch the same things at the cinema now.

Are you 'sure' it's not the hormones ?

GSOH · 08/02/2010 09:55

YANBU. I myself would leave a (much) bigger gap.

I got pregnat with DD when DS was 19 months old and DD was born when he was 2 and 3 months. Fab age gap. He is about to turn 3, dd is 8 months old and he is a brilliant big brother. We were even mad enough to toilet train with a 4 week old baby! they both slept through for a bit but now they both act up! its mad but we love it and in 2 years no more nappies ever again!!!

I have an 18 month gap so got pregnant when DD1 was 9 months old. It has been hard work and being [pregnant 2nd ime round is nothing like it was first time!

I didn't get the luxury of snuggling up in bed with my newborn or spending hours just staring at her as I had a bigger one to look after.

Saying that they are now 3.5 and nearly 2 and they get on so so well, I love seeing them together and very glad we had them close.

Advantages of big and small age gaps, I wouldn't have a 3rd so close, but asDD1 was still so small we had no jealousy at all. Double buggies are a nightmare though and the thought of having to have another one has totally put me off having anymore until DD2 is big enoguh to not need one.

incacat · 08/02/2010 10:09

I had my first and loved it all so much that we conceived when she was 5 months. DD1 took her first steps on the day that DD2 was born. Lovely. For us. Some people thought we were mad and still do as we now have four DD's all under 7. I say go for it. It will be hard work, especially with sleep, but so worth it.DD1 and 2 are so close and the other two are going to be best buddies too.

Meglet · 08/02/2010 10:16

yanbu. I did the same, ended up with 22 months between ds and dd.

It's very hard work, and quite unpleasant at times. But as I knew I would only have 2 I wanted to get it out of the way. At least by the time ds is at school dd will be 3 so I won't be dealing with a baby while trying to do the school run and get to work.
