KS1 reading book mentioning Satan

DD(6) had a churchy reading book from school this week which is fine, we going to Christingle service tomorrow with Rainbows. But this one actually mentioned Satan like a real person. Doesn't anthropomorphising sin remove responsibility of human free choice a bit? Is it still even preached? But I digress. Anyway DD doesn't even watch Dr Who because it would give her nightmares. So I asked her teacher to review the book as to its suitability for KS1. Was also badly written full stop with some typos LOL. Did I overreact? What do churchy peeps think especially?

Well, we used to get assemblies at school about the slaughter of the holy innocents. Never did me any harm

I guess I'd fuss more over the quality of the book rather than the Satan figure. Children really don't pick up on things in the way we do, and it'll probably go over her head as a book in a way that visual television won't. i don't think it'll scare her, but if it's that badly written it probably should be replaced with something better.

isn't satan a real person in religion?

badly written with typos is no good to a 6yo unless you can point it out.

Yes, Satan is a real person/entity in the bible. He is a different entity from Lucifer. I was reading about it the other day. I wish they taught that kind of thing in RE at Secondary school. It would be interesting for kids - like the Greek myths are.

I'm not 'churchy' but DD's school have just done a candlemas service. For Christians, Candlemas occurs 40 days after Christmas and marks the time when the infant Jesus was presented at the temple. The name refers to the candles that are blessed on this day in the Christian calendar.

I don't know that I'd be any more bothered about Satan having a part in book portrayed as a real person than God really. Depends how it's done.

LOL I was about Cristingle in Feb myself!

It was just the way it was presented like non-fiction, that there's this almost allpowerful evil bogeyman out to get us and we live in his kingdom (or something.) I'd just forgotten that that was part of the belief and it shocked me to see it in a book for little kids. Thought it would have been fudged around a bit in more mainstream churches these days.

Christingle isn't a "Christmas" service so it doesn't really matter when it's held - it's usually held around Christmas time though.

ToccataAndFudge · 07/02/2010 13:46

Chrstingle usually held December or January

Yep - YANBU - next!
