Bit of background i've worked all my life up until i had my 2 dc eldest one is 6 on july. 2 years ago i started working part time aswell. my dp has always worked aswell.

Any way last feb i had to give up work due to ill health i am going in for shoulder reconstruction surgery next month and am waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon about collapsed vertebrae they found i had in december.

Since i gave up work we have struggled by on dps wages and help from friends and family. when i was at drs 2 weeks ago she asked what benefits we got i said none as we have never claimed not thinking we were entitled.

The dr told me to contact the dwp as we should be entitled to something as dp only brings home £250 a week {i no its more than a lot of people get}.

I done this filled out all the forms to get a letter today telling me that im not entitled to employment support allowance as ive not paid enough contributions in last 3 years. whilst i was being a sahm and working part time so not earining enough to pay NI. And my dp earns to much according to what the goverment think a family of four need to live on.

I was really upset by this as we have always worked and the one time we ask for help we get told no so we have to struggle on paying rent and everything else. when there are people that have never worked get everythinbg handed to them.

AIBU to think the goverment policys are all wrong?

sorry its a long post but need to get it off my chest.

Rhubs redundancy but ahd he not slogges away at a PT job as well we'dhave been compeltely shafted. He managed to get a aplce at University so is being retrained and we will get there.

I suspct I willalways be a carer though so we'llalways have half what we might have earned otherwise, I willlook at being selfemployed when DS4 starts school and am doing an MA atm topotentially enasble this (in autism, seemssensible lol- we will feel the benefit whatever then).

It'shard ATM but by trying to change things wekeep hopefortue future which is ever important, and I don;tt hink you ahve that sat at home on IS tbh.

JUNGLIST1 The £150 you've got to live on a week is more than someone on benefits gets. But you resent the fact the scum aren't starving to death, don't you?

I never said that i would like to no how we have got £150 a week to live on after paying bills and school things liek uniforms and trips we have about £30 a week to feed 2 adults and a 5 and 4 year old on. I also no a few people for a fact that get more than £150 a week on benfits if you take in to account there housing, poll tax, school meals, prescriptions, dental charges all being got for free.

Thanks lou for that breakdown much easier to understnad. Ive got a cab appointment tommrow so will hopefully get something sorted out there. Talking about orgaisation of departments after getting the letter from dwp saying i wasn't entitles to anything from them i get a medical letter today to fill out from another department to help them asses my medical conditions to enable dwp to work out if im entitled to ews

Thanks to the helpful comment about going out to get a job from people. there is nothing more i would rather do but with a ds who deosnt start school full time till sept a shoulder surgery imminent that will take up to 12 months tpo recover from. and waiiting to see a consultnant about collapsed vertebrae the job option just isnt possible hence why GP said i should be entitled to help.

Sorry Ms Jackson - are you for reeeel?

(see what i just did)

No one wants starvation - but everyone knows welfare dependency is wrong. Morally, for everyone.

tjacksonpfc · 08/02/2010 14:39

sweetnsour im not planning on being dependant on welfare this is whilst i am unable to work due to illness not choice. as soon as i am fit enough and able to i will be baqck out looking for work so i dont no what your point is.

(tjacksonpfc; you didn't put quotes round your junglist quote, I think sweetnsour thinks you are saying that)

junglist1 · 08/02/2010 17:55

Very good Heathen. Did notice and could've said something mmmwwwwwahahahahaha

SkipHopJump · 08/02/2010 19:49

lou031205 - yes, DP is entitled to HB but only when he gives in 3 pay slips with SSP on. Which is a month and a half wait, even before they process the application! So that doesn't help him now, iyswim! But my post was a bit misleading.

Not entitled to WTC, he is only 24.
My point was really that in his time of actual need- he can't get any help.

tjacksonpfc · 08/02/2010 20:01

sorry heathen english never was my strong point

thats the annoying thing isnt it skip when you actualy need the help then you cant get it.

/No one wants starvation - but everyone knows welfare dependency is wrong. Morally, for everyone.

I am acarer and I categorically am not morally wrong, I have just been shafted luck wise.

It would however be morally wrong to hand my child over to the state (or both asd boys in my case) so I could earn, or leave them uncared for.

So I am quite happy to shout

YOU ARE WRONG

tjacksonpfc · 09/02/2010 13:19

im not saying that i want benefits dependency bethnoir. i have said that when i am medically able to i will be going out looking for a job. what i was saying is that when you work and have to give up through no choice of your own and could do with some helps to live the help is very hard to get.

BethNoireNewNameForPeachy · 09/02/2010 13:27

tjackson it wasn't you I was furious with Ipromise-was the person whoposted that! I have no issues with you whatsoever, we're a family with 2 /4 children with asd,I am acarer and dh working PT and retraining after redundancy-trust me,I have no issues with you LOL! Its meant to be a saftety net for times of need, such as you have atm.

tjacksonpfc · 09/02/2010 14:15

sorry bethnoir x-posts. friends

its a nightmare isnt it as a lot of people who find themselves in the need for benefit do it through no fault of there own and would rather not be in that position. its just really annoying. im now waiting for a phone call back from teh cab after meeting with them today they are looking into things for me im not holding my breath though.

if you ring the tax credits helpline 0845 300 3900 they will be able to tell you exactly what you are entitled to. I found them very helpful.

Feelingsensitive · 10/02/2010 19:40

You are right it is unfair. It is perfectly possible for people to contribute nothing but get loads back. My neice is a case in point. Had a baby at 16. Still never worked despite now being almost 30.
