To take a set of Encyclopaedia Britannicas to be recycled?

I mean... they are completely obsolete now, aren't they? We've had them 6 years and never needed to refer to them (internet research is so much easier) and they're just gathering dust and taking up a lot of space.

Will try to donate to a local charity shop first, but don't expect they will want them.

No use for Primary school and our local Secondary already has a set.

I don't think it's unreasonable. They do go out of date pretty quickly, and it does sound like you've thought of some alternatives which haven't worked out.

There's no point hanging on to them if they're wasting space around the house. Go for it. It's not like they're being any use right now, though maybe try one or two charity shops first to ease your conscience!

KurriKurri · 05/02/2010 19:56

e-bay or charity shop, someone may want them.

I'm squeamish about throwing books away.

PandaEis · 05/02/2010 19:57

how about your local library?? will they not take them off your hands??

if not i would recycle them TBH

BosomsByTheSea · 05/02/2010 19:58

Me too KurriKurri.

DH suggested we make better use of them by burning them

I want them!

But yes, the local library could use them?

BosomsByTheSea · 05/02/2010 20:01

Mom - they're yours if you can pick them up or pay for the courier! They are a lovely set too - leather bound and with gold page edges. Given to us by someone else who didn't use them! I'm in Cornwall.

kurrikurri The thought of willingly damaging books or throwing them away sends chills down my spine. Even if it is a logical thing to do. Strange one isn't it!

momofnearly2 · 05/02/2010 21:22

How far in Cornwall? I'm in Devon.

I'd love them if your sure.

taffetacat · 05/02/2010 21:31

I sold a complete set at a car boot sale c. 15 years ago. The vultures that are there waiting for you at the beginning leapt on them.

They are prob worth something

Gubbins · 05/02/2010 21:35

Freecycle them! I'd have them like a shot if I was closer to you. It would be sacrilege to bin them.

BosomsByTheSea · 05/02/2010 21:47

We are right down in the Far West - nearly at Land's End, so it would take you a while to get here from Devon.

I am sure, though - would much rather they went to a good home.

Not bad, About an hour and a half! Could make it a day trip, Haven't been down there for years!

I'll speak to Dp when he gets home (he drives) and let you know.

In the meantime can you estimate a price for courier? (South Devon, not far from Tamar Bridge)

(ps, is this allowed on here? lol)

BosomsByTheSea · 06/02/2010 05:59

Because of the weight, I think a courier would be very pricy - would have thought you'd be talking at least£80. There are 30 volumes, plus yearbooks from 1989 - 2001 - about 42 big books in all.

If you are in South Devon, then I'd say it's definitely worth the trip. I'd be very pleased to see them go to a good home. The lady who gave them to us said she had paid nearly 2K for them new and they are as new now - never used!

CAT me (click 'contact poster') with your number if DH is keen and we can sort out a pick-up date!

I wouldn't throw away books. If you can't find a home for them, consider donating them to a seniors residence, or hospital. They can always use books for patients to read.
They can also me made into cool lamps.
