to be annoyed at DH's boss

DH called in sick on monday. He had diarrhoea and it takes an hour on public transport to get to work. There was no way he would have been able to get there.
Also, he works with food, so technically he isn't even allowed to work when he has the runs.

I found out last night that his one day off this week (sunday) has been taken off him because he was sick on Monday. It's not like he was having a nice relaxing day with the family (in fact me and DS went shopping with my DB so DH could get some rest) and now DH has lost his day off with us.
It sucks that someone had to cover his shift, but they could have always said, no sorry I'm busy, instead of covering on the proviso that it is seen as an exchanging of days off (which DH was't consulted on).
This just means that the next time DH is really ill, he'll just struggle in anyway to preserve his day off, which isn't how it should be.

Someone obviously lost a day off to cover (or had to work all day, which is a 17hr day), but it's not like DH had a choice in the matter so is it unreasonable to expect him to keep his day off?

YANBU - that's awful. Surely they can't force your DH to work on his pre-arranged day off? Does he have a written contract that explains what happens when an employee calls in sick.

If I were your DH I would politely refuse to come in on the Sunday, saying that he had a prior arrangement. It does suck that someone had to cover his shift, but this will have been voluntary and it doesn't mean your DH should have to swop without consultation.

What does it say in his contract? Essentially if you are off ill, you cannot be on holiday. There was a recent European case on this www.horten.dk/cms/site.aspx?p=702&ShowNewsID=257

Suggest he tells his employers to re-think

It's shift work, so his contract only really stipulates that he works over 30hrs a week, as he is full time.
Even without his monday shift, he would still have been working well over 30hrs.
I can't remember what it says about sick days, except that you only get sick pay if you have a note from your doctor and if you are sick for more than a week, you have to have a doctor's note, or you will face disciplinary action (just a verbal or written warning usually).
