To not watch Cbeebies with DD?

Undercovamutha · 01/02/2010 17:46

To me the purpose of Cbeebies is to allow me the time and space to get the dinner ready. If I had the time to sit and watch it with DD, I would do something else with her instead. It just seems to melt my brain whenever I watch it for more than 1 minute.

However I know loads of people who know all the stories from a selection of different programmes (DH often comments that he's seen one of the programmes before - so he's obviously been watching a lot closer than I have!), and regularly hum the theme tunes!

I know its much more enriching for the child if you watch it with them, but I'm sure my vague knowledge of the programmes is adequate????

If it melts your brain, what do you think it does to your DDs little brain?

Numberfour · 01/02/2010 17:53

YADefNBU

there is a time and a place for everything, including Cbeebies! and if it gives you a few free moments to do something without interruption, all the better.

Undercovamutha · 01/02/2010 19:13

Oh Rollmops lighten up! She only watches about an hour a day FGS! And I like to think that I am disinterested in it purely because I AM NOT THREE YEARS OLD, not because it is hideously damaging!

I imagine DD would be similarly disinterested in watching Desperate Housewives tbh!

Nope, mine are currently watching a DVD when I'm on here! Do this for an hour most days. Same for children's TV...they watch when they're tired and I'm tired/busy.
As you say, if I was able to do something with them it wouldn't be watching TV. The exception is our 'family movie nights' which involve sweets!

And rollmops, I thinkyou've misunderstood...it melts the OPs brain because it's aimed at preschool children, I'm sure her DD doesn't feel the same. Top gear melts my brain, but I'm not worried for DH's mental health yet!

lililolo · 01/02/2010 19:22

Yep, could've written this post. I hate Cbeebies, but let DD watch it when I need to make phone calls, dinner, whatever...

totalmadness · 01/02/2010 19:22

A bit of tv is very good for mums santiy the dc's. It won't melt their brains, turn them into coach potatoes as long as it is only a part of your parenting not the basis of it

totalmadness · 01/02/2010 19:22

Dammit why can I never do the slash out thing???????

UndomesticHousewife · 01/02/2010 19:33

The whole point of CBeebies is to be able to dump them in front of it while mother goes off and does the dinner/does the washing/reads magazine...

I certainly don't sit down with them to watch it, like you say if I had the time to do something with my ds I wouldn't choose to sit in front of the telly with him.
I do spend time with him while the older ones are at school, but there are other things that i need to do too and I can only do them when he's occupied and that means watching tv sometimes.

Though somehow he's become very interested in Star Wars, don't ask me how as I've got girls who definitely aren't into it, I've never seen it and dh is not into it either.
Ds is 2.9 years and practically obsessed, I'm trying to get back to CBeebies!

minxofmancunia · 01/02/2010 19:35

yanbu but I find myself getting drawn into Mr Maker all too often (the programme not the bloke himself, he's a total irritant).

Usually when dd is watching cbeebies I'm on here or reading though, not doing laundry etc.

Dammit, DS has recently decided to refuse to watch most of C-beebies and instead has gone on a one boy crusade to plaster our entire house with scribblings artwork and rubbish cutting out.

If pushed he will watch one episode of Gigglebiz if we are lucky, but suspect he is too old for C-beebies, but not old enough for CBBC, arrgh I'm getting no mumsnetting time in the day

UndomesticHousewife · 01/02/2010 19:49

There have been somedays I've been so desperate for 10 minutes peace I'm frantically flicking through CBeebies, Nick Jr, Cartoonito, Playhouse Disney.... just trying to find something that would hold his attention - luckily I have Star Wars now a bit of fighting and light saber duelling and he's totally goggle eyed I'm joking of course...

Chillohippi · 01/02/2010 19:52

DS currently adores Meg and Mog and Strawberry SHortcake on Tiny Pop bless.

Undercovamutha · 01/02/2010 20:00

I must fess up and admit that I do make an exception for Boogie Pete!

YANBU luckily mine only seem to want to watch spongebob squarepants now which I actually quite enjoy!

ChippingIn · 02/02/2010 05:53

(TotalMadness - you need to do each word, not a 'set' of words)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/02/2010 08:02

YANBU. My dd 8.9 watches CBBC. If she didn't I'd probably murder her. I do occasionally watch a programme with her, my favourite is sorry I've got no head.

I like Ooglies and Shaun the Sheep

And of course Sarah Jane and Doctor Who

The rest is for kids. So I don't watch it.
