to not ring this person?

Bit of back story (sorry it's long)...

I went to the zoo yesterday for DD1's second birthday, and parked in the zoo carpark. We have a pretty old crappy large car, so I picked a space right at the end of the row to have a bit more room and to make sure I wasn't blocking anyone in. DP got out of the car and guided me into the space to make sure I didn't trash our car (or anyone elses).

We get back to the car at kicking out time to find a handwritten note on the dashboard saying:

"I don't know if you noticed, but when you have parked, you have scraped our car. We have taken your reg and would liked you to ring me on ***"

I absolutely, definitely know I didn't even touch any car, let alone scrape one. Our car is a heap, and has a couple of paint marks on it from previous dings, so I don't know if the driver saw them and jumped to conclusions. I know I've done nothing wrong, and so does DP as he guided me into the space.

So what do I do? I haven't rung the number, why should I have to? Surely they can't do anything can they? They have no proof, as I haven't done anything. I don't want to ring them, as I have a horrible temper and I'm likely just to shout 'fuck the fuck off you bunch of fucks' very loudly at them!

AIBU to just ignore the note?

What did the insurance company say Lily?

LilyLovesSid · 01/02/2010 17:16

They were lovely thanks upahill, basically took down my version of events and told me that they would inform me if/when this person got in touch. They couldn't really tell me if anything would come of it, as it's all investigated on a case-by-case basis, but the lady implied that they do hear a lot of stories like this, and that without video evidence of damage it's very hard to prove.

Feeling a lot better now, although a teeny-weeny bit of me still wants to ring up these people and see what their game is. But I will be a good girl and bite my tongue

Exact same thing happened to us in tescos carpark. Our car door just chipped the blokes paintwork which we saw, he claimed to the insurance we had put a massive scratch in his car, which would have been impossible fou us to have done. Went back and forward for a bit untill dh got fed up of him and phoned him up and accused him of insurance fraud (amongst other things.... Won't go there though) never heard from him since.

diddl · 01/02/2010 18:04

Is it up to the others to prove the damage?

Surely all they can prove is that you parked next to them?

BigBadMummy · 01/02/2010 18:07

THey can't do anything.

I had a situation where I was hit by another vehicle on a country lane. I had stopped as it is very narrow and he crept passed me but hit my rear wing, scraping the paint. He failed to stop but I got his reg.

My insurance company wrote to him and I also went to the local police station.

He said it wasnt him so that was the end of it.

The police could not pursue it and the insurance company couldnt claim from him. They could do the repair but I would have to pay the excess and obviously lose my No Claims.

So I sorted it myself.

I dont see any other way that they will get any information relating to your number plate. Certainly the police / their insurance company / DVLA will not release it.

Does the zoo have CCTV?

Do not phone the number unless it is to laugh at them in a Nelson from the Simpsons type voice.

LilyLovesSid · 01/02/2010 18:29

Hahaha - I would love to do that BBM! Just ring from a public phonebox and say 'HA HA', then hang up!!!

Rang the zoo and they only have CCTV at the entrance to the park, not in the carpark (which is basically a large field cordoned off into lanes for parking). I thought as much anyway TBH.

I feel much happier now I've spoken to the insurance company - was getting wound up every time I thought about ringing the number I was left. Now I can just leave it to the professionals, who can politely tell them to fuck the fuck off!!

I agree with heQet. They're probably trying it on so insist they go through your insurance.

With regards to what they will do...heres my story (will try keep it short)
Im sat in my car in a supermarket car park (no cameras) & the guy parked at the side of me reverses & clips my back end.He stops, I thought he'd seen me & so was coming to apologise, instead he drives off I get out, check damage - pretty bad so I get bastard head on & decide to follow him (on my own!)He runs red light (prob scared shitless of mad woman behind) after me following, flashing & beeping for 3 miles I lose him - maybe a blessing in disguise in hind sight as I had just found out I was pg...not good for the blood pressure.

Whilst persuing, I phone home (not on hands free - naughty, naughty)& leave all car details on answer phone. Get home, call police. Police attend drivers home as a "fail to stop" he denies all until PC points out damage to his car. Bloke says he'll ring me which he did & advised to take my car to "his mates" garage. DH declines as is in the motor trade & says their work is crap so we'll go through insurance......

Ring insurance, get hire car send my car back twice due to poor workmanship, pay £250 excess to get car back as bloke is now denying all. I am now 5 months down the line & still no further but £250 out of pocket for something that wasnt my fault. It may eventually go to court but even with all the above info inc statement from PC the insurance company are struggling.

So from my point of view you'll be fine & have nothing to worry about!!!
I wouldnt even ring...how can they prove you've recieved the note!?

LilyLovesSid · 01/02/2010 22:41

Oh my God storm01! Your story makes you sound like someone in an action movie!!

OP posts:
STORM01 · 02/02/2010 17:51

Hi lilylovessid....no action movie just a hormonal pg woman who was pissed off!!!
Just shows you the amount of things like this that happen though & how crap insurance companys are.....not to mention how rude & selfish some people are.
