to lack sympathy for anyone having difficulty with their tax forms today?

I mean, you left it to the last day possible and now are upset you can't figure something out on the "stupid form". Maybe if you'd sensibly allocated a bit more time to the task, incase you ran into difficulties, or done it at a time when there was a helpline available....?

My books were to the accountant by the end of April last year [very smug emotion], howver apart from a letter from the tax office that we need to get our returns in, we haven't had a demand yet for payment

Riven. Dh gets his done at work but ours has to be done too as our finances are complicated. He does it himself though as he is a big geek

UnquietDad · 31/01/2010 17:45

I absolutely detest doing mine which is why I put it off. It is the most hideous thing I have to do in my working life.

mistletoekisses · 31/01/2010 17:51

Did mine early Dec and they owed me money!Result!

But took me weeks to build up to the task. is such a ballache!

BouncingTurtle · 31/01/2010 17:53

Bloody hell, mine was done by July last year!!

Though I do have a very small turnover, and use an online book keeping service!

cerviniasun · 31/01/2010 18:58

Unquietdad - back when I had to do one...I absolutely detested doing mine too - which is why I DIDNT put it off. I figured the only thing worse than doing taxes is doing them under intense deadline pressure.

DH generally leaves everything to the last minute. He always makes out that its because he's so busy, but its so chronic I figure its just his personality. Wish I could understand it though, might help me have more sympathy.

Did mine and dh's in June when the P60 finally arrived for him; sent recorded delivery when we were back in UK in July. Had to chase my refund for ages and got it in November.

I am not anal, but did a year as a Tax Officer when I was 19, and from 1985 to now have always done the returns on the basis of 'well, you worked there'. I am now 44!

I have to do one in Flemish as well, so the UK one is in the right language at least.

I did mine two weeks ago, when I first became self employed I used to have mine in by May Bank Holiday every year, since you can do it online, it has gradually got later and later.

Still twas earier than last year which was the 29th.

I have this years all done bar feb/march, I WILL DO THEM AND SUBMIT BY MAY (honest )

peppapighastakenovermylife · 31/01/2010 21:34

My dad has had a fine for not doing his on time several times. My mother seriously despairs at him.

It wouldnt be quite so bad if he wasn't an accountant!!

fluffles · 31/01/2010 21:48

i could NOT have christmas without having it done - it would just gnaw at me...

i don't understand why anybody would be doing it today!

princessparty · 31/01/2010 21:57

I did mine DHs and our parents' tax returns this evening.Unfortunately my DHs business stuff is all in sage on a little laptop which decided it was going to die at 5pm this evening.
So we have had to reinstall on another machine and then do a restore , at which point we realised we hadn't made a backup for a while. So we have been frantically doing everything on the back of an envelope.

TeaOneSugar · 31/01/2010 23:32

When DH was self employed his accountant used to go on holiday the last two weeks of January so it was impossible to leave it to the last minute, otherwise we would have I'm sure.

I did mine over the past month (collating info from various places), but filed last night, with 30 mins to go. I nearly didn't make it, though, as I had locked myself out of the system by putting in the activation code instead of my password, because who knew where my password was? I certainly didn't, and what else could this code I had received be for, anyway? Anyway, I was locked out for a couple of hours, so sloped off to watch Lark Rise on t'i-player, then logged in and filed! Thank God for that; this was the first time I had ever managed to get the PIN, activation, and all info together in time.

The last time I tried to file online, I got the PIN/password/whatever long after the we'll-work-it-out-for-you deadline, so I had to do the tax calculation myself. Has anyone ever done that? It is utterly awful. I can't imagine who designed the form; did s/he have little coloured strings connecting the boxes, to make sure the whole thing flowed properly, and there weren't any orphaned or widowed boxes?

The last couple of years I've done mine by post as I find it easier to take in if I've got the paper in front of me. This year I was worried about sending it off because of the postal strike, I thought that if it disappeared I might not find out until it was too late and I'd got a fine.
So it got left to be done online. I didn't leave it to the last minute, just the beginning of Jan, which was lucky. I'd seen all the ads saying you had to do it by 31st but nowhere was it mentioned that you had to send off for a number which came through the post. And the whole country was at a standstill because of the snow so I was worried I wouldn't get that on time! I might as well have taken a chance with the paper one in October and saveed myself the extra months of worry!
Plus I hate online forms so got dh to do it so of course he was terribly smug and kept saying "well it's not exactly difficult".
