To think there's something a bit emperor's new clothes about Molton Brown?

I love bubble bath so often get given it for christmas etc. And I now have a selection of Molton Brown ones. Which I know are a generous pressie and not cheap etc. so I should be grateful.

But... really, they all smell vaguely the same. And what they smell like is basically a bit like washing up liquid! Or is it just me?

I must admit, I find that JM candles dont smell of much, I thought I must have got a bad batch!

YANBU, MB is mostly average stuff priced as wild extravance.

I love all sorts of posh smellies, and don't care what they cost. But MB is always so disappointing, I think they look like childrens bubbles baths, all different colours in uniform basic packaging.

I do shell out for the eucalyptus one in winter becuase there's no other product like it, but meh and double meh at the rest of it.

And I've never forgiven them for pulling out of QVC and denying us the beyond-parody Mrs Overall woman waxing hysterical over bubbles

I used to stay up til midnight for that

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 19:22

I agree, I don't like MB.

My other/cheaper faves include the champneys spa ones - especially the rose one and the grapefruit one, and also duchy originals rose and mandarin - lovely, you can get it in waitrose.

I'm great to buy smellies for at Xmas....fave smell being Dove. Just think it smells 'clean' - love it.

MB stuff = a rip-off. Sight of it in bathrooms makes people think places are posh when they're not, eg. hotels, gyms, trendy bars...

hatwoman · 31/01/2010 22:11

i can't equate "luxury" with freebies in hotels or on aeroplanes. so, for me, even the image doesnt work. and the substance seems to be v. mediocre.

I first bought a selection box of shower gels from QVC about 4 years ago and loved every squeeze of them. They were very simple fragrances- green tea, black pepper, and one called "abc" or something that was being discontinued, goodness knows why, it was yummy.

Since then I've had the odd bottle as a present and I've felt both grateful and sorry for the person who thoughtfully shelled out. There are some weird pinky purpley homogenised whiffs nowadays.

IME the body lotions are particularly pants.

champneys oriental bath float...hmmmmmm

scottishmummy · 01/02/2010 18:05

i really like molton brown the hand wash is divine

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/02/2010 18:13

yy to Bulgari - we had that on our honeymoon in a Four Seasons!

I'm not keen on MB, it's v.overpriced and although it smells quite nice it isn't really very nice on your skin. I have a shower gel that was a present and it really dries my skin out in a horrid way.

L'Occitane vastly superior IMO.

Nothing beats Clean on Me by Soap and Glory from Boots - it's just the BEST smell

thedollshouse · 01/02/2010 18:28

I have never bought Molton Brown but pre children when I had the money I had a soft spot for Elemis products. Very expensive but made me feel lovely. I think sometimes posh smellies are overpriced but they are a lovely luxury like expensive underwear and champagne & posh chocs.

Bonsoir · 01/02/2010 19:07

Everything about Molton Brown is so has-been and boring.

overmydeadbody · 01/02/2010 19:13

YANBU

pointydog · 01/02/2010 19:23

yan bu. Nothing special about it especially as you can now buy cheaper versions in bottles that look just as good.
