O/T ebay dilemma

LittleMrsHappy · 28/01/2010 18:51

We sold a item on on ebay last week and the man who brought it is apparently having trouble from paypal.
They have asked for our bank details (is this normal) they have loads of good feed back.
Not sure what to do, or is that a very very silly question.

Don't give your bank details to anyone.

LisaD1 · 28/01/2010 18:56

Can't they send you a cheque and then you give them/despatch the item once cleared? or cash on collection?

I would not give my bank details to anybody via ebay.

LittleMrsHappy · 28/01/2010 18:56

Yes thats what I was thinking, but surely if the payment didn't go through paypal, paypal would not be able to refund the payment that didnt go through their systems? surly

Also were not the buyer, we are the seller.

Paypal may not be able to get involved but eBay can if there is a dispute.

Give them a couple of days to sort it out then offer it to the second highest bidder. Why bid if you know you're having problems with Paypal?

sungirltan · 28/01/2010 19:03

do you know what the problem with paypal is? there are other safe money transfer services you can use - one of my ebay traders insists on using 'nochex' (sic) that one seemed ok.
I know its a bit old fashioned but the buyer could send you a postal order - they are pretty safe although there is now an admin charge.

Sparklyblue · 28/01/2010 19:03

misssurry, op is the seller. The buyer is having problems with his Paypal account.

misssurrey · 28/01/2010 19:15

Err, yeah I know Sparklyblue !!

I was empathising with the op.

I've had buyers pay me with a bank transfer before. They are not giving you any information that won't come on the cheque (i.e. name, account number and sort code), and it saves you waiting for a cheque to clear. You can have paypal problems for all sorts of reasons, I lost mine for ages once when I forgot to update my credit card after it expired. They won't be covered by buyer protection policy, but then that's their lookout not yours. You're far safer with a bank transfer than a cheque, cheques bounce, bank transfers will only be made from cleared funds.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/01/2010 20:42

Sounds a little suspicious TBH. I would worry that a good account (i.e. one with lots of +ve feedback) has been hacked for the sole purpose of harvesting bank details. After all, they'll have your Bank details, name and address - could be enough to apply for a credit card possibly, and redirect mail? Yes, I have a very cynical turn of mind!

I personally would offer to wait until they had sorted out their PayPal or would accept a cheque.

glitterstar88 · 28/01/2010 20:50

I wouldn't of thought they would need your bank details, thats the whole point of paypal isn't it? Not having to share bank details. Would you accept cheque or postal order? If they dont want to do either of those then do 2nd chance offer.
