Bit of background info so it is not AIBU by stealth. We live on the 9th floor of an apartment block. The people above us have thrown cig ends, drinks etc onto our balcony.

We have been in contact with the management cmpany and they have sent 2 letters to our neighbours and to the neighbours landlords.

When I confronted neighbours about them throwing drinks (tea/coffee) onto the balcony they just kept saying "prove it is us".

Well, this week I am on holiday - yippee. Heard neighbour on balcony and SAW him throw the dregs of his drink from his balcony. So I can say 100 percent it was him.

So, AIBU to ask his landlord to provide an abseiling balcony cleaner to clean the glass (outside) on my balcony.

How disgusting. I would confront the neighbour himself again, if you dare, preferably as soon as you see it happen. But no YANBU.

I don't think YABU to ask, I do think it could be dangerous to let your delightful neighbours know you are going to be away. What a lovely group you live by. Is abseiling the only way to clean the balcony? I imagine it would be costly.

Abseiling is the only way to clean the outside of the balcony and the windows. I am on holiday this week, but not going anywhere. I think that is why they took the opportunity to throw the drink off their balcony, I would normally be in work.

I might get the management company to write them another letter stating they where seen throwing the liquid from their balcony (also think about pedestrians who where walking by our apartments when they threw the fluid from the balcony).

YANBU

Cheepz · 28/01/2010 20:59

YANBU But it is the management company not the landlord that needs to deal with it. Its not the landlords responsibility to deal with something that has resulted from the behaviour of a neighbouring property. However the landlord could help you put pressure on the management company to tackle the neighbours on their crap behaviour, and the management company should pay for the external cleaning (which will end up being paid for by all the resident (owners or landlords) - that will make these arseholes popular on the block eh?! when a fat charge appears on the bill for all the residents ...

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/01/2010 21:04

As a landlord I would be really peed off with that request but would put pressure on the management company to persue the landlord of the other flat and the tenants. Perhaps you could ask yours to do the same, maybe suggesting he witheld his management fees until something was done.

agedknees · 29/01/2010 16:20

Five - we own our property. This is why I wanted to get the landlord of our neighbours. Why should innocent flatowners pay for the disgusting behaviour of some of the tennants.

I'd leave the landlord out of it atm and go through the management co as they will be responsible for organising the cleaning anyway and they can recharge the ll. likely to be more effective and stops you getting caught up in a neighbour dispute.

emsyj · 29/01/2010 16:26

Definitely complain to their landlords!!! We have a house that we rent out and if our tenant treated the neighbours like this we would be unimpressed and would look into what we could do about it. They are causing you inconvenience and affecting the enjoyment of your own property. YANBU, but first of all just contact the landlords (you can find out who owns the property via the Land Registry if you don't already know) and tell them what's going on. They probably have no idea.

Feelingsensitive · 29/01/2010 16:29

YANBU to ask but I doubt he/she will pay. I am a landlord and what I would do is go in person and speak to the tenants and yourself. I would tell them they have been seen throwing drinks and on the basis of unsocialble behavioiur/safety I request them to stop or I evict them. If they are doing this then they are probably doing something else the landlord wouldnt like within the flat. Twats.
