not saying it's a waste of time at all.
i do value education and hope my daughter has every chance possible.
but i feel some people are overly hung up about it all.

but is possible to not do that well at school but to go on to well in life.
lots of business owners and entrepreneurs did not excell academically

and whos to say who is happier out of say the average hairdresser or the average doctor.

I never understand why this debate becomes an either / or.

Can't you have a good education AND do other things, the 'life skills'.

FWIW I also think it is telling that it is often the most educated (e.g. the Oxbridge parents referred to above) are the ones who tend to push the most. I think they know that getting good results is only a little to do with natural ability and a lot to do with working hard. And I also think it is naive to think that everyone who has a 'basic' job is happy. Most people I know kick themselves for not working at school and had had the opportunities to get themselves into a well paid respected profession

Happiness=successs, simple as that. There are some very educated people around that are not very happy.

sea, whos saying your son should not be able to study for a certain career that others take as a given?

i can't see anyone saying that.

nor can i see anyone saying everyone in a non academic job is happy either.

simply that education is not the be all.

dark and stormy, i agree with happiness equals success.
