Move to Holland. You'll REALLY appreciate UK supermarkets then!

God I miss Waitrose. And Tescos for that matter...

Funnily enough they're obsessed with them here too - especially one chain becoming too powerful. Mind you, one company owns the 2 major chains .

ppeatfruit · 25/01/2010 17:08

I have thought for a long time that supermakets have too much power and if the govt. wants to put our taxes up:Instead how about charging for carparks at the supermkts for a start and putting a high vat on all the crappy high wheat /sugar salt convenience poo foods they sell.
Oh and stop them selling cheap alcohol!!!

EdgarAllenSnow · 25/01/2010 17:18

i collect money from tescos, waitrose, Asda, etc - (and i have to say their new edi supplier systems are vastly better than the pre-existing systems, if that's what you do for them Orm...some of those were so poor they put people out of business by non-payment.) If Orm ever wants to work for a faceless multinational bank instead, I'll definitely put in a word (and collect me £500 bonus for doing so!)

and yes they do screw their suppliers a bit - though their contracts can qually keep a company afloat...so a mixed blessing.

the very good thing about trading with tescos is, you know they won't go bust before they pay you. You might, but they won't.

lets face it, supermarkets are great - that is why they are so successful. People go on about local shops etc - and a good local shop is a gem, but all too often - irregular opening times, limited range, high prices, shockingly rude and intrusive service - made them a crap option.

and quality of food wise, supermarkets actually apply fairly stringent standards to suppliers (appropriate to price bracket of course) which some small shops are simply not in a position to do.

and why do we get angsty about them on Mumsnet? well, supermarket shopping is something most of us do, and fierce competition between the big 4 has upped customer expectations considerably. we expect alot and every time go shopping is another opportunity to be disappointed!

EdgarAllenSnow · 25/01/2010 17:30

i love cheap supermarket booze. their £1.17 cider was the highlight of our friday nights for a good while....Now dh homebrews, wine can actually be cheaper though...

i think the boozeaholism of the UK is rather less of a simple problem than some make it out to be.

shockers · 25/01/2010 19:07

bronze He thought that The Co-op were a much more ethical set up than Somerfield (and Sainsburys, and Tesco). I know they sell themselves as such but always wondered if there was really that much difference. He said there was.

shockers · 25/01/2010 19:10

Sorry Bradsplit, slight hijak.

The Co-op have fair trade mango juice in their pool

EssenceOfJack · 25/01/2010 19:29

I have raised eyebrows by admitting I do shops in different places for different things, Aldi for fruit and veg, tesco for baby stuff, Sainsbo's for drink, asda for prepared fish.

If you really want to amuse yourself, use the 'wrong' bags in shops, asda bags in sainsbo's get you judged by people, and sainsbo's in tesco's get glares.
But really, I go to whichever one is more convenient that day/week.

It is weird though, 'brand loyalty' to a big shop that sells much the same thing as all the other shops

misscph1973 · 25/01/2010 19:47

In general I LOVE the British supermarkets - I'm from Denmark and there is just no choice of variety in the supermarkets there.

I live close to an enormous Tescos and I absolutely hate it. I always get really stressed when I'm in there, it's so big and they keep rearranging the aisles!

I love Waitroses, the local one is small and nice, but obviously I can't afford to shop there all the time.

I get a Sainsbury's delivery once a week and then I top up in Waitroses / Tescos with whatever I forget or run out of. I am happy to buy any supermarkets own brand, I am not fuzzy. Never tried Morrisons or Asdas as there are none near.

Every now and again I go to Aldi and Lidl for a few bits - we have them in Denmark as well so it's a bit like being back at home ;)

heQet · 25/01/2010 19:53

What makes me laugh is how people talk as though supermarkets dropped from the sky and began firebombing local shops.

erm. Supermarkets only got massive because we all flocked there and put our money into them instead of the local shops!

So they are what they are because WE chose them. They started out small and grew so big because WE shopped there. The little shops closed because WE didn't spend our money there. Then we criticise supermarkets for it as though they forced us down the aisles at gunpoint.

EdgarAllenSnow · 25/01/2010 20:08

precisely my point Heqet - few of us really want to trawl round small shops with children in tow to spend over the odds for a limit of choice of goods served by surly staff who will gossip about us before we are even out of the door.....

The Dark Ages >shudder

Notalone · 25/01/2010 20:15

Undutchable. Would that be Albert Heijn by any chance? I loved Albert Heijn when I was in Holland a few months ago but probably because it was a novelty. I think I would miss our supermarkets if I had to shop there all the time. I feel like sending you a goody bag from Tesco lol

EdgarAllenSnow · 25/01/2010 20:17

albert heijn is lovely though more equivalent to M&S i thought - if someone can send some chocolate eggs, vla and stroopwafels...

slobber

Notalone · 25/01/2010 20:22

Chocolate eggs? Choccolate eggs?? Why didn't I see the chocolate eggs?!!

Paolosgirl · 25/01/2010 21:14

Love the post from BradSplit - it is like a country club for some people

IcedBum · 26/01/2010 17:52

I don't understand how if a chicken had its wings, legs and breasts cut off you could still roast the body and serve four people.

BadGardener · 26/01/2010 17:57

LOL Icedbum - I wondered the same. Like this perhaps?

Paolosgirl · 26/01/2010 18:00

Iced - I wondered that as well, but thought I had misread the post!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/01/2010 18:16

I also wondered but wasnt going to say anything incase I was missing something and I didnt want to get ridiculed!!

notnowbernard · 26/01/2010 19:05

Re the chicken: butcher chopped it up. Enough meat on it to bung in the oven and roast (to feed 2 adults and a 3 and a 6yr old)

Paolosgirl · 26/01/2010 20:32

OK - without getting too obsessed with this £10 chicken, don't they all feed a family of 4 (5 in our case) as a roast, with enough meat left over for a risotto or pie, and a carcass which can be used for stock?!

Paolosgirl · 26/01/2010 20:33

I mean I'm in danger of becoming obsessed!

notnowbernard · 26/01/2010 20:34

Yes - but this one went further than that even... as I said, it made several meals, not just the standard leftovers meal and stock

But yes, let's not obsess over chickens

WinkyWinkola · 26/01/2010 20:37

I think we're obsessed because we spend so much money in them.

I'd like to know more about their behaviour towards suppliers. Anyone recommend a good book about it?

I love Waitrose but because it's an almost pleasant shopping experience. I happily fill my Asda hemp bags there so no snob value gleaned.
