LOL, ROFL, BD for example. Im also irrationally narked by phrases like

"I'll get me coat"
"End of"
or "Fact". Which is usually, placed, rather smugly at the end of a statement. (not necessarily a factually correct one either)

AIBU?

Tortise I am so glad you said that - I am new to mumsnet and I have to admit I was really surprised by the use of DD/DS and DH. I started reading posts and was so excited about the high standard of wit and commentary - 'what a group of down-to-earth, switched on women I thought' but I wonder what all those letters mean - then I looked it up. My "Darling/Dear Daughter" ... really?. An expression I hate is 'end of play' used at my workplace ... a lot.

Squishabelle · 25/01/2010 11:50

Housebuyers looking for a "property".
The word space when describing rooms in a house ie living "space".

Mumcentreplus · 25/01/2010 11:52

tortoise you are not alone!!!

TiggyR · 25/01/2010 11:52

The misuse of literally, as in 'I was literally exploding with laughter.'

And people describing something they experienced or witnessed by saying 'You felt like you were in a dream, you heard a huge bang and you saw people running'.

No, dear. I didn't. I wasn't there. YOU did.

Two4One · 25/01/2010 11:52

Calling clothes "pieces".

Brolly - I hate that.

Cup o' tea - why do people drop the 'f'? I have a friend who says this even though she speaks quite nicely in all other ways. What's wrong with that 'f'?

nickelbabe · 25/01/2010 11:53

i hate "at the end of the day" too.
especially because it's bandied about to mean "all the time" or "constantly" or "the truth is that"

eg "at the end of the day you owe me this money".
because I only owe it at bedtime? I obviously don't owe the money in the morning...

and "end of." i hate that. hate it.

Mumcentreplus · 25/01/2010 11:54

bickie yours too?...are you a civil servant by any chance?...if you are I also hate 'under my command' - like they are friggin generals or something!...get over yaselves!

Two4One · 25/01/2010 11:54

Amazing.

Hardly ever used to mean something that is actually amazing. Usually used to describe a pesto sauce. Or your new flip-fops.

Squishabelle · 25/01/2010 11:56

The addition of an extra 'h' in some words eg
reshtaurant, shtudent.

AlwaysUltraFlexiWings · 25/01/2010 11:56

Kreecher, BD stands for Baby Dancing and is a silly euphemism for sex or trying to conceive.

Thanks for the clarification Tallulah.

Ronshar, this reminds me of a friend's niece, who thought LOL stood for Loads of Love. So for example, my friend posted a sad Facebook update about having lost her beloved cat to cancer, and the niece would write 'sorry about the cat LOL'.

TiggyR · 25/01/2010 11:57

And people who ask for 'a tea' or 'a wine'. It is essential that tea and wine is asked for in a cup or a glass. It is perfectly acceptable however, to have 'a beer' or 'a coffee.' Don't ask me why, it just is.

AlwaysUltraFlexiWings · 25/01/2010 11:58

Don't care for "Laters" (as in see you later) either.

OP posts:
ronshar · 25/01/2010 11:59

Yep thats exactly the kind of thing I would do so I dont use it at all.

CalpurnicaTate · 25/01/2010 12:00

The word trouser used in this way : "would look good with a black trouser" in magazines

TiggyR · 25/01/2010 12:00

Beverage is a bizarre word as well. It seems to be used exclusively by the catering and vending industry, yet the entire English-speaking world only ever asks for a drink!

Squishabelle · 25/01/2010 12:02

Baguettes. Why do shops use this word?

TiggyR · 25/01/2010 12:02

I say baguette! Sorry - disallowed.

ronshar · 25/01/2010 12:05

Isnt that a long loaf of french bread?
See I am rubbish at this game

LucyEllensmadmummy · 25/01/2010 12:06

baguettes? whats wrong with baguettes?

I hate "suck it and see", people use this all the time and well, see - what i see is.............

LucyEllensmadmummy · 25/01/2010 12:08

oh and "you're not going to like this" um, well don't fucking tell me then!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/01/2010 12:09

Thanks always. Can't bear dd saying a lot of slangy stuff. Some of which she understands, a lot, she hears on the school bus. her current favourite is calling someone the shittybits that hang off a sheeps arse (in german).

wukter · 25/01/2010 12:09

Topical debates on the radio "The reality is...". Gah hate it.

wukter · 25/01/2010 12:10

Kreecher - they are Daggins around here

Squishabelle · 25/01/2010 12:10

Baguette - yes it is French bread but I hate sandwich shops offering 'baguettes' instead of sandwiches or rolls.
