Loads of people I know don't realise they can get various benefits (I didn't realise I could get housing benefit with dp working, for example) so it is well worth checking out www.entitledto.co.uk to see. Also very good for seeing what would happen if you took a new job or whatever.

Sorry, not really an AIBU, but could really make a difference to people lives, so thought I'd stick it where it would get seen.

I just put my details in here and it was fairly spot on with amount of tax credit and child benefit we get, which is a shame I hoped it would tell me I was entitled to more .

Coldhands · 20/01/2010 09:22

Thanks for the info. I'll check that out although I suspect we are getting what we are entitled to tbh.

I don't know - there's an interesting moral issue here isn't there? I've always hated the word 'entitlements' - it has embedded in it the idea that somehow people are 'owed' something by the state by sheer virtue of them having been born. It's not the case.

What if a family were managing OK - not rich, but not poor either, but then discovered that they were 'entitled' to additional benefits?

Should they claim them, just because they're 'entitled' to? I tend to think not.
There's a finite pot of money at the end of the day, and one family's claim for a 'bit extra' (which they may not really need) potentially takes funds away from a family who may be in genuine poverty.

My dad is entitled to Attendance Allowance, but won't claim it, as he says he is fine, and doesn't need it.

I don't have a big problem with the site itself helping people in genuine need, but I do worry about the 'entitlement culture' we now have in Britain.

Coldhands · 20/01/2010 09:42

My GPs were the same. My step GD could probably claim carers allowance because of my nans arthritus but they don't need it so he is not bothered.

On the other hand. My DH works full time for a shite wage, we live in a pretty expensive part of the country and I am on In Cap due to long term illness but we still have to pay full prescriptions (I often need a few), glasses (which we both wear), dentist and stuff like that. When we both need new glasses, we are talking about well over £200 including tests so if we are able to get anything, I will claim it. Unfortunately I have looked into things before and my DH apparently earns 'too much'. Ha! I would love to see MPs try and live on his wages, not a hope in hell.

coldhands we are the same, we live in the south east so our housing is quite expensive and my husband is on a fairly average wage I think which is too much to claim some things. We get child benefit and a small amount of tax credit.
On the other hand my mum was badly disabled and wouldnt claim anything even though it cost them a fortune to get thigns she needed day to day, she wouldnt even apply for a disabled badge or the car.

fernie3 · 20/01/2010 10:06

for the car not or the car

Mines is very easy to work out. There is a great big stamp in my passport that says "NOT ENTITLED TO PUBLIC FUNDS".

Keeps things simple.

Coldhands · 20/01/2010 14:40

fernie Yeah I have done the calculator thing and we are getting all that we are entitled to, which is the same as you. Just what I expected. Quite annoying really that MPs think not much over £15000 is 'too much'.

onagar · 20/01/2010 14:50

Whippet, I know what you mean, but if you were entitled to a tax rebate would you send it back?

Means tested benefits wouldn't be paid out to you if you were well off anyway. The kind that pay out regardless are because you paid in for them like an insurance policy.

Certainly if someone were rich enough they could decide not to claim, but taking what you are 'entitled' to is no different from taking your change in a shop.

MrsVidic · 20/01/2010 14:58

I'm with onagar- I figure if we pay shit loads of tax and we are entitled to the money that we should have it.

Yes its not much but i'd rather have it and save it for when we need it.
