You should give up your job and SPEND IT.

If you decide that, even at the age of 76, you will continue working and "it will not change our lives" you should give alot of it to charity so it can change lives.

I know it isn't that cut and dried but I get so pissed off with the "ooh it won't change anything" brigade when they have massive wins.

THere are too many people in this world whose lives would be changed hugely by £1000, let alone £26 million.

Why do the lottery if you don't want to spend it?

All I have to say really!

wannaBe · 19/01/2010 09:56

well tbh I think that most people who play the lottery never actually consider that they might win. Given the odds are millions to one.

I don't think it's possible for that amount of money to not change your life though. Even if you don't give up your job/don't move house etc once you make it public that you have that kind of cash every money grabbing person with a sob story will come crawling out of the woodwork wanting a piece of you. And that's before you get to the expectations of family and friends.

Well the man that's won it says he's giving the majority of his winnings to cancer research because cancer killed his wife. I think this is fab.

Sunshinemummy · 19/01/2010 10:18

Cancer Research donating is fab but I would definitely not be at work if I'd won on the lottery. I would be heading to the nearest beach to plan my next course of action

poshtottie · 19/01/2010 10:21

There was a couple who won 11 million on tv yesterday and still play the lottery every week. What are the chances of winning once let alone twice.

We got 5 numbers just before xmas which was £1500. Nice xmas present.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 19/01/2010 10:21

Maybe work is the only thing keeping the man sane? I really thought I would win that lottery, I had a dream and idiotically promised dd all manner of things with our winnings. DH could have a car we decided.

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/01/2010 10:22

If I won 26 million I'd give 20 million of it to charity for a start. Its such a mind boggling amount.

Morloth · 19/01/2010 10:23

DH would still work - because he is an addict.

Rindercella · 19/01/2010 10:25

Perhaps the man enjoys his job? Maybe, after the death of his wife, he is lonely and work is the only place where he gets to interact with people?

Until you are in that situation (please God, let it be me soon!!! ), you really don't know what you'd do.

There is a really interesting book by Hunter Davies called 'Living on the Lottery' which is an anonymised account of various winners' stories. Overall, the findings of the research that has been done (according to the book) are that the lottery overall makes little difference to a person's happiness - maybe one or two points out of ten. Some people reported being LESS happy after a lottery win. Those people tended to be the ones who had drastically changed their lifestyle as a result of the money - e.g. buying a new house in a different area away from friends and family, telling everyone they'd won resulting in attitudes towards them changing etc. The ones who were happiest had told nobody or hardly anybody about the win and had made minimal changes such as paying off the mortgage, having a holiday etc.

So, on that basis YABU.

Also poshtottie I seem to remember a TV programme a few years ago that showed a family who had indeed won twice...!

I used to have a professional interest in the lottery as the firm I worked for was on the advisors' panel and I used to do tax and estate planning for lottery winners - I am not just an obsessive!

emsyj · 19/01/2010 10:34

wannaBe, it's really interesting to note the number of people who never tell anyone about their win and who really do continue with a lifestyle very very close to the one they had previously - I would say about half of the winners I came across gave up work. One bought a business, the rest continued in their old jobs.

Maleeka · 19/01/2010 10:39

Bloody hell if that was me, the first thing i would do is tell my boss to stick his bloody job where the sun dont shine!

I would then hire David Tennant to massage my body with suntan lotion as i sipped cocktails on the deck of my yacht!

Ahh what it is to dream and how shitty it is to realise that i have to go to that bloody crap job right now when i could be on here all day having much more fun!! Cya peeps

Morloth · 19/01/2010 10:41

I think we would just pop it away and not tell anyone. Our lives are already pretty good, it would be nice however to know that it is there as back up.

MadameCastafiore · 19/01/2010 10:59

Bloody hell it is up to them what they want to do - they may leave it all to charity in their will after earning loads of interest on it for a few years or they may retire in 10 years and then go and blow it all.

His job may be the only place he has any human contact and he may think that if he stops that he will be surrounded by disingenuous people only after him for his money.
