Doc: Hello, how can I help you?

Ginger: I've been trying to conceive for a year now and...

Doc: (interrupting) How many children have you got?

Ginger: Three

Doc: (abruptly) If you've got three children, why are you trying to have another one?

Ginger: Well, erm... etc

I had actually gone to see her because I'm suffering vile periods and as it happens we have decided that we are no longer going to ttc#4 as the planned 'big ones - little ones' age gap we had planned is not going to happen because it's taken so long....

So what do you think?

AIBU and a little bit over sensitive or is the doctor being a bit unreasonable getting all judgy with me?

YANBU, cheeky cow.

Northernlurker · 18/01/2010 21:35

No yanbu. Doctor has totally failed to listen to you and their opinion of the number of children you should have is totally irrelevant. I've got a friend who staggered to the doctor with dreadful morning sickness in her fourth pregnancy. Doctor's response 'well you shouldn't have got pregnant then'

neenz · 18/01/2010 21:36

YANBU, it's none of her business how many kids you've already got.

LittleMrsHappy · 18/01/2010 21:38

Definitely not, she is not their to pass judgement on family life, she is their for a medical need only, very unprofessional, and one tbh I would be putting a complain in too the practise manager x

gingertoo · 18/01/2010 21:40

Glad you agree!

It's not the first time it's happened with this doctor actually.

After ds3 I went to get some contraception and she told me that she'd give me something this time but that I needed to start thinking about a 'more permament' method of contraception

Is this your usual GP? Sounds barking- I would change tbh

Mermaidspam · 18/01/2010 21:48

YANBU

DorotheaPlenticlew · 18/01/2010 21:49

YANBU -- sounds like this GP has ishoos of some sort re people having "too many" kids. Avoid if possible.

giraffesCantWalkInSnow · 18/01/2010 21:50

YANBU!!!

sowhatitsonlysnow · 18/01/2010 21:51

Is it a large(ish) practice? If so could you not see one of the other GPs?

gingertoo · 18/01/2010 21:57

Thanks everyone

Changing doctors is definitely an option. We have not got a doctor in our village so people tend to go to practices in two neighbouring villages so I could try the other one.

I'm cross with myself that I didn't think of changing doctors sooner.

I've put off going to the doctors for ages because she's such a cow and it's starting to look like I should have gone much sooner

the how many children question might be linked to criteria for which referral to a fertility clinic might be funded/not

the why do you want another question was crass

BuckBuckMcFate · 18/01/2010 22:07

YADNBU

Is your Doctor my Doctor Gingertoo?

I went to see her about contraception/awful periods following a miscarriage.

Me: We have decided we don't want anymore children

Doc: Yes, I can see that, you had a termination in March

Me: No, I had a miscarriage!

Still feel the rage when I think of it!!!

BlackLetterDay · 18/01/2010 22:09

YANBU I got this from a HCA whilst she was taking my blood at the practice "You will stop at 3 dc won't you?" "You can't give more than 3dc the attention they need" so on and so forth . I was very close to telling her to fuck off tbh, fwiw I do plan to stop, but it's none of her damn business. I also was offered sterilisation at every turn, fgs I am only 28, I have no idea where I will be in 10 years no matter how I will feel, grr.

Imo doctors should actually listen, poor you, deffo go to another one and check out your symptoms.
