Grow 2 inches between September and January when I've only just bought secondary school uniform that was meant to last until (at least) the end of year 7?? I've so far replaced her trousers and her blouses, and tomorrow am going to have to get her a new blazer (£23), a new PE sweatshirt (£14), AND at least one new school jumper (£16 each)...probably 2 of the jumpers as I don't have a tumble dryer and she needs one to wear and one to wash! She was meant to wait until Easter as that's when they're allowed to wear the summer uniform polo shirt instead of their blazer, and no jumper would be needed. GRRRRRR.....Is she sleeping in compost??!! On an instrument of torture? Or is she just growing purposely at intervals timed so as to be the most costly to me??!!

YABU, she grows.

Alambil · 17/01/2010 23:22

YANBU - it's damned annoying!!

Put bricks on her head

Sazisi · 17/01/2010 23:24

Lewisfan

Sazisi · 17/01/2010 23:27

Is it not possible or acceptable to get any of it 2nd hand (you could discreetly ask school secretary)? That might learn her

She is clearly doing it just to annoy you.
Ban all pleasurable activities until she shrinks back to a sensible, clothes-fitting height.

Quattrocento · 17/01/2010 23:28

I've told my DCs to stop growing to no avail over the years ... Perhaps we need to read How to Talk ...

stealthsquiggle · 17/01/2010 23:31

Secondhand shop. Then you won't care as much, and she will stop growing.

SE13Mummy · 17/01/2010 23:32

My 5-y-o DD also seems to think it's acceptable to out-grow all her school clothes. Luckily for me I had an inkling this might happen so bought pinafores in age 6-7 (for my then nearly 5-y-o) and age t-shirts. It meant she looked slightly ridiculous in September but the uniform fits perfectly now!

CardyMow · 17/01/2010 23:34

I wouldn't mind so much, but I had to replace the DS's (almost brand new) uniform in October half term as well. So since August, I have bought (almost!) 6 full sets of fecking school uniform!! And our school doesn't have anything second hand. I wasn't even asking about getting anything there, I just wanted to donate it, as I don't see DS1 in 4 years time wearing (obvious) girls blouses and bootcut trousers, and all my RL friends girl's are the year ABOVE her, and too tall for them. I'm thinking a set of Encyclopaedia Brittanica on top of each of their heads should do the trick.

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 17/01/2010 23:36

Hang on - if your RL friends have girls in the year above - you need to buy one of said friends a bottle of wine, and then remove nametapes from inherited clothes before your DD sees them....sorted!

stealthsquiggle · 17/01/2010 23:37

(or advertise on freecycle - I see a lot of uniform offered/wanted on ours)

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/01/2010 00:00

Stop feeding her, perhaps?

Ds2's school blazer didn't even last up to the Christmas holidays in Year 7, but it wasn't because he outgrew it. He spilled custard down the front, so dh decided to be helpful and sponge it down. Unfortunately he didn't just hang it up near a radiator to dry (it would have had all night), he decided to iron it dry, leaving a huge iron shaped burn on the front of it.

So I had to replace it just before Christmas - and it cost £45!!

CardyMow · 18/01/2010 00:41

Stealthsquiggle - good idea in theory, but how many parents will be replacing a blazer this early on in the school year to be able to hand one on?? (I know none of my friends are, I've asked!) (I'm now buying my DD the same size clothes as their DD's are currently in!) And SDTG - Did you leave an iron shaped burn on the front of your DH .

Why not buy things in slight bigger sizes that way you will have room for growth. My mum used to do that and i laughed at her, now i am a mum i do the same thing and it saves money in the long run.

TheLadyEvenstar · 18/01/2010 00:57

I have told DS1 to stop growing! he started secondary in November (midterm transfer) and his shirts and trousers need replacing, the problem is he has got taller and also skinnier fgs I know he is doing it to annoy me!!! he has also had the cheek to go up 1 1/2 sizes in shoes!!!!

And DS2 well I am glad he is not in school yet!!!! Bought him some Timerlands for xmas size 8.5 and they are already too small

Is there not a way to slow them down?? - keep them in a darkened cellar for instance??

TheLadyEvenstar · 18/01/2010 00:58

Piglet and i did buy DS1's uniform too big as well!!

ThursdaysGirl · 18/01/2010 01:10

My 4.5 year old DD who is in reception fgs needed everything replaced before Christmas and I now have my fingers crossed that the age 8/9 years items last until Easter

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/01/2010 10:07

Loudlass - I certainly considered it - lolol!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/01/2010 10:09

Round here now, the problem seems to be the Vanishing Trouser. It doesn't seem to matter how many pairs of school trousers we buy, or how many go through the wash and get ironed and handed back to the dses on Sunday night, either ds1 or ds2 will claim to have no trousers for school.

I think that an evil gremlin is coming in and either hiding or stealing the boys' trousers - or maybe eating them. Grrrrr.

YANBU, I am sure she does it deliberatly to ennoy you! Teenagers hey

MayorNaze · 18/01/2010 10:19

all mine have this annoying habit

as ds is in y6 i have only bought him 1 pair of trousers and 1 jumper instead of a couple as i know i will just have to replace them sooner rather than later

dd1 is just the same, she is 7 - in september new pinafore was slightly too long, come xmas she looked liked she was modelling for mary quant grr

i think i will home ed dd2 and she can become a nudist as well, that should save some £

notagrannyyet · 18/01/2010 10:30

I have 3 DS 16, 14 & 13 and have managed to hand uniform and most other clothes down from 1 DS to another. Younger two have had some new stuff but not much.

But 14 year old has now caught his big brother up. Both are over 6ft tall and in the same size clothes. And of course they're in mens sizes not boys.....£££s!

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2010 11:30

notgranny - just to make you feel good - my DM bought DB1 his first 'proper' suit at 17, thinking he was done growing - and he promptly grew another 1.5". Ten years later, she fell for the same thing with DB2

The resident gremlin in our house eats DS's (special, expensive, only available from school) school socks. Said socks are a PITA, but on the flip side since he wears shorts year round I don't have to replace trousers every 3 months (except home trousers)
