WHY oh WHY don't children eat their crusts? It drives me mad! What is it about them?
OK I know it's a minor thing but really annoys me.

They're horrible. I don't either!

worldgonemad72 · 16/01/2010 23:59

i didn't as a child as i was told they would make my hair curly (i already have really curly hair and pictured myself as crystal tips lol)im still not a big fan now tbh but thats because i dont butter the crusts.

ds1 always ate his crusts and then at aged 6 decided he didn't like them
ds2 has never liked crusts
ds3 devoured every bit but about 3 weeks ago he started leaving them on his plate (he's 2)

I love crusts!

BertieBotts · 17/01/2010 00:01

I don't eat them because they are so much more chewy than the rest of the bread, and they are usually the driest, least filling-ful bit of the sandwich so it seems like a lot of effort for not much gain.

I expect that is also what most children think. Also they taste very slightly bitter because they are more cooked than the rest of the slice of bread.

I love crusts, and did as a child. dd won't touch them. At least I know this one isn't my fault!

ShinyAndNew · 17/01/2010 00:04

Dd2 eats dd1's crusts. I always eat the crust first because they are horrible, but it was indocrinated into me that you must your crusts as a child and now it feels wrong to leave them, even when I don't like them. They are dry and tasteless imo.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2010 00:04

Although thinking about it, I do tend to eat them now because I think it would be a waste if I didn't. Not because I actually like them. I'd say the average child wouldn't consider leaving the crusts a waste (or think about the waste of food in the first place) so this probably explains why it's more common in children than adults.

And you can't get away with cutting the crusts off, because the edge where the crust was will always be a little bit dry and annoying.

Plonker · 17/01/2010 00:11

I still don't eat crusts.

Well, that's not entirely accurate - I still don't eat black crusts (the top of the bread). I quite happily eat the brown crusts (sides and bottom) and we fight over the end crusts.

Am I a little bit ...odd?

BrahmsThirdRacket · 17/01/2010 00:13

I still don't eat crusts unless I'm super-hungry. I have ringletty hair!

mumhadenough · 17/01/2010 00:14

Nope I don't eat crusts, too dry for me.

displayuntilbestbefore · 17/01/2010 00:15

am I the only one who looks forward to starting a new loaf and eating the crusty end of the loaf, then?

Armi · 17/01/2010 00:20

Displayuntilbestbefore - I'm a crusty-end-of-the-loaf addict. My DH, on the other hand, refuses to eat his crusts. I once - rather meanly, admittedly - removed the crusts from the sandwiches he takes to work, and made them look like the delicate little sandwiches favoured by those who take afternoon tea at certain well-known hotels.

He still hasn't forgiven me.

displayuntilbestbefore · 17/01/2010 00:21

lol

did you put thinly sliced cucumber and salmon in them too?
